The University of Guelph is a medium-sized university located in Guelph, Ontario, established in 1964. While the U of G offers degrees in many different disciplines, the university is best known for its focus on life sciences, based in part on a long-standing history of achievement in Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and within Canada for its School of Fine Art and Music. The university has over 90 majors in 13 degree programs and 63 Open Learning/Distance Education Opportunities.

Restrictions for Exchange Students |
|
Undergraduate Restrictions
The Ontario Veterinary College is unavailable to all exchange students.
The following Departments may require proof of exchange students attaining the appropriate course pre-requisites:
AGEC (Agricultural Economics), COST (Consumer Studies) and HTM/HAFA (Hotel and Tourism Management) courses. Students cannot enrol in these courses until after their arrival.
This applies to some higher level courses (3000 or 4000) in some disciplines.

Housing Options |
|
On-campus accommodation:
Guelph guarantees residence for incoming exchange students. There are several on campus housing options such as residence halls with single or double rooms available.
Off-campus:
For students who generally prefer to live off campus, the Office of Off-Campus Living works closely with students, residents, City staff, landlords, and City Councillors to help facilitate communication and to ease the way for students who live in Guelph.

Consular/Visa Regulations |
|
The Canadian Government has two main types of immigration documents: permits and visas.
A study permit is required for anyone that wants to study in Canada for 6 months or more. A temporary resident (entry) visa is required by citizens of some countries to enter Canada.
Exchange students studying in Canada for less than 6 months i.e. one semester, need not apply for a Study Permit.

Health/Medical Insurance |
|
The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is a mandatory insurance to pay the cost of the hospital and medical services that international students and their families may need during their stay in Canada while registered at the University. The fee is both compulsory and charged as part of your tuition and fees which can be viewed on WebAdvisor.
