Housing Options |
|
As SFU is not able to guarantee on-campus housing for its exchange and study abroad students, please apply in advance online with the Residence Office by March 31 (for the Fall term beginning in September) to be placed on a priority list for available on-campus housing for the fall term. On-campus housing for the Spring term, beginning in January, is limited. As such, students are advised to consider off-campus housing options. Spring term applicants who wish to also apply for on-campus housing, in case space becomes available, must apply on-line with the Residence Office by September 1.
On-campus accommodation:
Students could choose among single student housing, female-only traditional residence, co-ed traditional style or family housing. All residences have kitchen areas, but there is no meal plan. Students can buy a debit card for campus cafeterias at the beginning of each semester, and meals will be charged to that lump sum.
Off-campus accommodation:
If you wish to live off campus, visit the off-campus housing website to find accommodation. You’ll find a wide range of housing options, including apartments, houses and townhouses. Accommodation near campus is very popular and can fill up quickly. If you plan to live off campus, it’s a good idea to arrive a few weeks before the beginning of term to give yourself time to find a suitable place to live and to get settled.

Consular/Visa Regulations |
|
Exchange students studying in Canada for less than 6 months need not apply for a Study Permit. For students who are embarking on a year-long exchange program, please refer to the Canadian embassy’s website for further information regarding applying for a Study Permit or Temporary Resident Visa.

|
Health/Medical Insurance |
|
All students who attend Canadian universities on exchange are required to purchase the health insurance recommended by their host university as part of the registration process. In addition, they can also purchase additional optional insurance from a private insurer for their term of study overseas. These short term optional insurance plans cover events such as personal accident, accidental medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation etc. If you will be in Canada for less than 6 months, you will not be eligible for the BC Medical Services Plan. You must ensure that you have private temporary coverage for your entire stay in Canada.
Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to the university’s insurance policies.
