Institution Profile

Queen's is one of Canada's leading universities, with an international reputation for scholarship, research, social purpose, spirit and diversity. Consistently highly-ranked, Queen's is known for its incomparable 24-hour learning environment. Great teaching, great students, community and tradition - these are the hallmarks of the Queen's experience.

Queen's University is located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, a quintessential university community big enough to provide all the conveniences of modern life, but small enough for students, staff and faculty to feel instantly comfortable and at home. For more than a century-and-a-half, the stories of Queen's and Kingston have been inextricably entwined.

Accommodation
Housing Options

Students are strongly encouraged to opt for a Winter term (Semester 2) if they are intending to spend only a semester at Queen’s. This is because the availability of housing options around Queen’s is scarce during the Fall Term (Semester1) period.

On-campus accommodation:

Queen’s Residences have a limited number of one-term placements available in the two Residence buildings to which exchanges students are normally assigned. Science 44 Co-op (co-ed) and Princess Louise Women's Residence are privately owned student-housing options. Both offer a limited number of one-term placements.

If you are accepted to live in a Queen’s Residence hall and plan to come to Queen’s earlier than the residence move-in date, you can apply to Residence Services to request for early admission as early as possible. Please note that there is a nominal cost involved for these extra days and some restrictions may apply.

Off-campus accommodation:

There are other housing options off-campus. Study Abroad and Exchange Students can look into two databases that provide a comprehensive overview of accommodation types available. The Queen’s Apartment and Housing Listing Service and the International Housing Office (IHO) Database offer different varieties of housing options which includes house and apartment, shared accommodation, rooms, faculty units. Alternatively, the Alma Mater Society (AMS) Marketplace has an online marketplace that students might find useful. It is accessible from the AMS Marketplace page by clicking on the “Housemates” section at the right side of the page.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulations

The Canadian Government has two main types of immigration documents: permits and visas.

A study permit is required for anyone that wants to study in Canada for 6 months or more.  A temporary resident (entry) visa is required by citizens of some countries to enter Canada.  Permanent residency is the official term for what many people understand as immigrating.

Exchange students studying in Canada for less than 6 months i.e. one semester, need not apply for a Study Permit.
Health/Medical Insurance

All Queen's international students residing in Ontario during their period of study must enroll in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) before being allowed to register. All international students attempting to pre-register or register through QCARD must complete a UHIP application to enroll/waive themselves and their family members who reside in Ontario before pre-registration can be completed. Participation in this plan is compulsory for exchange students.

Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to the university’s insurance policies.
