McGill University is one of Canada's best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the country's leading research-intensive universities. The oldest university in Montreal, McGill was founded in 1821 from a generous bequest by James McGill, a prominent Scottish merchant. Since that time, McGill has grown from a small college to a bustling university with two campuses, 11 faculties, some 300 programs of study, and more than 33,000 students.
The ability to balance academic excellence with the extracurricular is another hallmark of the McGill student. In addition to a rich athletic tradition that includes many Olympians, thousands of McGill students participate in the hundreds of clubs, associations and community groups that enrich Montreal and contribute to a vibrant campus life.

Housing Options |
|
On-Campus Accommodation:
While priority for residence accommodation is given to first year students, some places may be available for exchange students at the start of each term. For example, the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences tries to accommodate all exchange students in the Macdonald Campus residences.
Off-Campus Accommodation:
The McGill Off-Campus Housing service publishes online lists of apartments for rent and to share, as well as rooms for rent in private homes throughout Montréal. The Off-Campus Housing Website also contains information on Montréal and Québec leasing laws. The Off-Campus Housing Service is open year round, and offers courtesy telephones and computers and friendly advice to help students in their housing search.

Consular/Visa Regulations |
|
Non-Canadians must obtain permission to study from the governments of Québec and Canada. Immigration Québec issues the Certificate of Acceptance of Québec (CAQ) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada issues federal Study Permits.
International students should begin the application process for both a provincial CAQ (first step) and a federal Study Permit (second step) as soon as possible after receiving their letter of admission from McGill. However, exchange students studying in Canada for less than 6 months need not apply for a Study Permit.

|
Health/Medical Insurance |
|
McGill requires all international students and their accompanying dependants to participate in the compulsory McGill International Student Health Insurance Plan, which is administered by International Student Services.
Students who meet certain criteria may be eligible for an exemption. If you believe you are eligible, you must present valid documentation proving eligibility to International Student Services.
Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to the university’s insurance policies.
