Outbound Programme for NUS Students
AY16/17 (August 2016 - May 2017)
TFI LEaRN outgoing students teaching English lessons to the local children, during their overseas community service

What is this programme about?

With the aim of grooming leadership skills, the TFI LEaRN Programme @ NUS nurtures the next generation of Asian leaders by providing opportunities for cultural exchange, networking, community engagement and leadership development.

Students will receive the following awards:

  • China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia - S$7,000
  • Remaining Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) - S$6,000
  • Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan - S$5,000

When and where does it take place?

In Semester 1 or 2 of AY 16/17 under the following programmes:

  • Student Exchange Programme to partner universities in Southeast Asia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan;
  • OR
  • NUS Overseas Colleges programme to Asia

What is the content?

  • Academic courses
    TFI LEaRN scholars must obtain a minimum overall Cumulative Average Point (CAP) of 3.5 out of 5.0 during their exchange in the host university.
  • Community Involvement
    TFI LEaRN scholars are required to spend a minimum of 15 hours on at least one community involvement project in the host country.
  • Host Programme
    While on exchange, TFI LEaRN scholars are to source for host(s) at the host country. This can take the form of a host family or a local friend. Home-stay is optional. Upon return from exchange, the award recipients are to play the role of hosts to inbound exchange students.
  • TFI LEaRN activities
    All TFI LEaRN activities are compulsory. These include the Introductory Briefing, Temasek Learning Journey, Service Learning Workshop and TFI LEaRN Young Asian Leaders Forum. Students are required to help organise the events, when called upon by the International Relations Office (IRO). The events will be held in Singapore.

Promotion of the TFI LEaRN Programme @ NUS

  • TFI LEaRN scholars are required to share their experiences and learning with fellow students in their home countries and fellow LEaRN students through seminars and other platforms.
  • TFI LEaRN scholars are required to help promote the programme when called upon by IRO.

What does it include?

A scholarship from Temasek Foundation International.

Students will receive the following awards:

  • China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia - S$7,000
  • Remaining Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) - S$6,000
  • Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan - S$5,000

The scholarship will be disbursed in two installments,upon the satisfactory completion of the programme.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Students must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Be full-time coursework undergraduates who are going on exchange in Semester 1 or 2 under the Student Exchange Programme to partner universities in Southeast Asia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan or under the NUS Overseas Colleges programme in Asia
  • Be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Possess a Cumulative Average Point of at least 4 (out of 5)*
  • Be interested in community service and have served in leadership positions

Note:

* If your CAP is between 3.8 to 4.0 and you have outstanding community service and leadership experience, we will also consider your application.

Email invitation will be sent to the NUS account of eligible students.

* Students on NOC should contact their NOC coordinator at NUS for the updated timeline.

When will the outcome be known?

With reference to the above application schedule for Semester 2, students will be notified of the outcome via NUS email, as per follows:
