Founded in 1906, the Warsaw School of Economics (WSE) also known in Polish as Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie (SGH). It is the oldest and largest economics and management university in Poland. The student population is approximately 13,000. It graduates over a 1000 students annually.
Amongst the prominent alumni of SGH, which includes Ministers for Finance and Deputy Prime Ministers in government, are:

  1. Leszek Balcerowicz, President of the National Bank of Poland, former Minister for Finance
  2. Józef Oleksy, former Prime Minister
  3. Grzegorz Kołodko, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance between 1994 to 2003.
  4. Dariusz Rosati and Andrzej Olechowsk, both former Ministers for Foreign Affairs
  5. Danuta Hübner, the Minister for European Affairs and currently Poland’s first Commissioner in the European Union,
  6. Jan Truszczyński, the chief negotiator for Poland’s accession to the EU, and
  7. Wiesław Rozłucki, ex-chairman of the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

Academics

Courses available:

Courses offered to international students are offered in English. Students with a high proficiency in Polish language can take courses in Polish as well. Students are required to take one Polish language course while at SGH. There are 2 Polish language courses available to exchange students at no extra cost.

Cost of Living

The official currency in Poland is the Polish zloty – zl. 1 zl = 0.5 SGD

The average cost of living, except accommodation, is estimated to be 1000 zl. per month (500 SGD). Average accommodation prices are:

  • Two-room flat: 1000 - 1200 zl (~600 SGD) per month.
  • One-room room flat: 800 - 900 zl (~400 SGD) per month.
  • Living with Polish family: 300 - 400 zl (~200 SGD) per month.

Usually all flats are furnished with a fully equipped kitchen and washing machine.
