THE UNIVERSITY OF OSLO
Norway
Institution Profile

The University of Oslo (UO) is situated in the capital of Norway – Oslo. As the largest city in Norway, Oslo is the country's financial and administrative hub. With picturesque parks and forests within the city boundaries, nature is never far away either.

With the campus and some student villages located very close to the woods, students can easily go for ski trips or cabin trips after classes or on weekends. The “Walk in the Woods” and “Sleep in the Woods” trips organized by the International Office are highlights of many exchange students' experience in Norway. Yet with downtown just as close to the campus as the woods, those who prefer clubbing and shopping will feel right at home too.

So here's your chance to dance till dawn, then hike around a mountain lake to catch the sunrise, and finally crawl back to crash in the comforts of your warm cosy bed!

UO offers courses mainly in arts, humanities, law and medicine, and can claim Four Nobel prize winners.

Academics
  • Website for courses taught in English at http://www.uio.no/english/academics/courses/
  • Courses in English are available for the following faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration, Law, Science and Computing.
  • Courses taught in English usually offered only at higher levels (from level 2000 onwards). “0000-level” courses are instrumental to other courses (e.g. support courses, introductory courses and brush-up courses) and these are meant for 1st year students, “1000-level” are foundation courses at bachelor level for 2nd year. “2000- and 3000-level' are advanced courses at bachelor level while “4000- and 5000-level” are advanced courses reserved for the master level.
  • Courses in the first two years (eg. introductory courses, Levels 0000 & 1000) are usually taught in Norwegian. Thus, it would be best if NUS exchange students went on SEP in their third year.
  • Students can read up to 30 ECTS each semester in UO. On average, each student reads four courses per semester. Thus, when proposing study plans, NUS students must ensure they can earn enough NUS MC-equivalents without exceeding the 30 ECTS limit at UO.
  • Most courses have exams at the end of each semester. Exam schedules are made clear to students when lectures start.

Housing Options
Housing is guaranteed for exchange students provided that they send in the applications before the deadlines which are June 25 for the fall semester and November 25 for the spring semester. More information can be found at http://www.uio.no/english/student_life/beforearrival.html#housing.

Additional Information
The Overseas SEP Loan is available to NUS Exchange Students up to a maximum of $3,000 per semester and subject to the family's monthly per capita income.
