NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Norway
Institution Profile

The name, Norwegian University of Science & Technology (NTNU), is rather misleading as NTNU is a comprehensive university, and can thus be an option even for Arts and Humanities students.

NTNU is situated in Trondheim, the third largest city in Norway. Known as the technological capital, dynamic Trondheim continually spins out many new companies in sectors ranging from automation to telecommunications.

Trondheim is also called a university town because one in every five Norwegians graduates from NTNU. NTNU has several campuses across the town, the main ones being Gløshaugen for Engineering/Science and Dragvoll for Arts/Social Science.

Many major student festivals like Uka and ISFiT are held in Trodheim. Students can join the largest sports association NTNUI in Trondheim. Norwegian is usually used during lectures. English lectures are only available in higher years like third, fourth and master's years.

Academics

Course information:

  • Website for courses taught in English at http://www.intersek.ntnu.no/ECTSweb/index.htm.
  • Courses in English are available for the following faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Engineering, Law and Science.
  • Courses taught in English usually offered only at higher levels (Years 3, 4, 5, and 6 courses).
  • Courses in the first two years (eg. introductory courses, Level 1000/2000) are usually taught in Norwegian. Thus, it would be best if NUS exchange students came in their third year.
  • Students can take up to 30 ECTS each semester in NTNU. Thus when proposing study plans, NUS students must ensure they can earn enough NUS MC-equivalents without exceeding the 30 ECTS limit at NTNU. On average, each student takes four courses in one semester.

Academic calendar:

  • NUS semester one = NTNU autumn semester (August to December)
  • NUS semester two = NTNU spring semester (January to June)

Most courses have exams at the end of each semester. Exam schedules are made clear to students when lectures start.

Housing Options

Students are assured of housing if they send in the applications before the deadlines. For more information, please go to http://www.ntnu.no/intersek/guidelines/accomodation.htm

Exchange students will usually be given a place in the Moholt Studentby and Steinan Studentby, depending on which is nearer to the campus that they are studying in. The deadline for housing is 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 month before arrival for the spring semester.

Additional Information
The Overseas SEP Loan is available to NUS Exchange Students up to a maximum of $3,000 per semester and subject to the family's monthly per capita income.
