Founded in 1919, the University of Latvia (UL) was established as a national university, one of the symbols of the Latvian state’s independence and culture. The UL is the one of the first classical universities in the history of Latvia and follows the slogan "Scientiae et Patriae". In the period between 1919 and 1940 the UL was the greatest centre of higher education, science and culture. The former building of Riga Polytechnic in 19 Raina Boulevard serves as the symbol of the university even till today.

In the course of time higher educational establishments such as Latvian University of Agriculture, Latvian Academy of Medicine, Riga Technical University were separated from the UL and became well-known centres of education and research.

Latvia -  A country on the crossroads

Latvia is a small country on the Baltic Sea with ancient history and traditions. Situated near the Baltic Sea, it also offers other beautiful natural scenery. Besides architectural monuments and beautiful churches, Latvia also has a wide range of health rehabilitation and active recreation possibilities.

Courses are conducted in Latvian except for the programmes found in the following website.

Intensive Latvian language courses are held in summer for students who have no knowledge of Latvian.

Housing Options

Students should notify the International Relations Department well beforehand of their intention to live in the University dormitory, because the number of places is very limited. Usually, all international students are housed in double rooms with a common kitchen on each floor. Linen, blankets and pillows are provided as well as some kitchen utensils. The payment for the dormitory is about 100USD per month.
