The university was founded in Haifa, Israel, in 1924. As Israel 's oldest and premier institute of science and technology, the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology has been an active and leading participant in Israel 's establishment and development. With supreme effort and unyielding dedication, deserts have bloomed, swamps have been transformed into fertile agricultural valleys, and sand has given way to silicon. Israel is now recognized as one of the world's most prominent high-tech innovators, and has been called the second Silicon Valley.
Haifa
Haifa is the third largest city in Israel, and is located in the northern part of the country. It is the main port of Israel making use of its natural bay, and serves as Israel's major link to the sea. Haifa extends over a chain of hills, part of the Biblical Carmel range, which rise majestically overlooking the Mediterranean. Climate conditions in Haifa are moderate, typically Mediterranean with four distinguishable seasons.
Language of Instruction
All Visiting Students staying longer than two months are expected to acquire some basic knowledge of the Hebrew language. The university offers a five week intensive Hebrew course (Ulpan) that precedes the start of the teaching semester. Students attending this Ulpan should plan to arrive at the beginning of September (for the Winter Semester), or at the beginning of February (for the Spring Semester).
Elective classes which are based primarily on mathematical material do not present much of a linguistic barrier to the Visiting Student. All course homework (exercises and essays), as well as examinations, can be submitted in English. If a Visiting Student has a problem understanding Hebrew, he/she should inform the instructor at the beginning of the course. A competent, English speaking Student Tutor can be made available to help the Visiting Student where necessary.
Some courses in Humanities and Industrial Engineering and Management are available in English.
