Starting from a petition in 1960 by a local citizens’ action group, the University of Ulm was founded officially in 1967 as an institute of higher education for medicine and the natural sciences. Despite being relatively young as a university, Ulm has worked to inculcate a spirit of research excellence, through creative and co-operative exchange with universities worldwide, producing internationally recognized results.
Except for a few teaching hospitals, all the University departments are within walking distance, and easily accessible by local public transportation. The University is situated on one of the many hills which surround the city of Ulm amidst beautiful natural scenery, including the nearby Botanical Gardens.
