UNIVERSITY OF ULM
Germany
Institution Profile

University Homepage: http://www.uni-ulm.de

Starting from a petition in 1960 by a local citizens’ action group, the University of Ulm was founded officially in 1967 as an institute of higher education for medicine and the natural sciences. Despite being relatively young as a university, Ulm has worked to inculcate a spirit of research excellence, through creative and co-operative exchange with universities worldwide, producing internationally recognized results.

Except for a few teaching hospitals, all the University departments are within walking distance, and easily accessible by local public transportation. The University is situated on one of the many hills which surround the city of Ulm amidst beautiful natural scenery, including the nearby Botanical Gardens.

Ulm – Neolithic Town to Economic Centre

Ulm is a city in Baden-Württemberg, situated on the river Danube, about 90 km south-east of Stuttgart and 140 km north-west of Munich. The city, forms an urban district of its own and is the administrative seat of the Alb-Donau district. Founded around 850 AD,it is rich in history and traditions as a former Imperial Free City (Reichsstadt). Together with its twin-city, Neu-Ulm, Ulm is the cultural and the trade center of a large region known as Swabia.
The history of this city lives not only in the carefully restored old city quarters with their picturesque narrow streets, but also in numerous historical festivals and customs, such as the "Fischerstechen" (a kind of jousting) on the Danube. It is primarily known for its gothic cathedral with the world’s highest church steeple and as the birthplace of Albert Einstein.
