Founded in 1877, The Technical University of Darmstadt (TUD) has the reputation of being a working university, with demanding studies and high standards. Its continuous efforts to further its research and teaching standards have been both locally and internationally appreciated and confirmed in various rankings and recommendations.
Besides aiming to educate and produce the best future professionals, the university also provides attractive clubs and societies to satisfy the cultural and intellectual needs of its students. Such activities include language courses, sports and other cultural experiences.
The student population is 17500 with an international student percentage of 14%. Darmstadt has a considerably higher international student percentage than other German universities making it a very diverse campus in addition to one that serves every possible needs of a developing young professional. Engineering Sciences has had the largest intake over the past few decades.
Darmstadt – A City of Science and Arts
Darmstadt , known as the city of Science and Arts is situated in the Rhine-Main area of Germany . It is a well known centre for Science and Technology and its universities and colleges all have good reputations in this field. Darmstadt is about 30km south of Frankfurt and 60km north of Heidelberg . The central Frankfurt am Main Airport is about 20 minutes drive away from the city. Darmstadt 's population reaches to around 140,000 people. The city shows a variety of buildings and artifacts, dating back to as far as the baroque and renaissance times. It was known that Darmstadt is the home of the arts; however it received its second signature in 1997, being a technological city in recognition of its work in science and research of the industrial needs.
Language of Instruction
With the exception of all foreign language courses, lectures at TUD are held in German. The University offers intensive German courses before and during term time.
