The University of Aachen is characterized by its emphasis in the areas of Science and Engineering. Besides its wide range of Science and Engineering subjects, it offers a broad range of Humanities in its Arts and Business Administration & Economics Faculties; this is done to focus on interdisciplinary skills which are the needs of future young professionals. The University's work and research strongly supports local industry and its strength in innovation can be evidences by the large number of start-up companies founded in the region over the last 20 years. Aachen has been said to be the German Silicon Valley.

Aachen has a student population of 30000 students, 5000 of which are international students.

Aachen – A City of Three

The medium-sized city of Aachen is the most western city in Germany , its border being the border of the country. It has French speaking areas and Dutch speaking areas in close proximities, hence making it a city of Three languages. The only language which is common to all Aacheners is their local dialect. Aachen has a very lively and colorful image which can largely blamed on the variety of cultures and people in Aachen . In addition to being a town at the border, it also has numerous street markets and music festivals to display its cultural diversity.

Language of Instruction

With the exception of all foreign language courses, lectures at the University of Aachen are held in German. The University offers intensive German courses before and during term time.

Housing Options

The University of Aachen has on-campus Halls of Residence and rooms are allocated by the Student Services of the University. In order to secure a place, applications must be received before the deadline specified by the University. Students can also opt to rent accommodation off-campus; types of accommodation available can range from an individual room to 2-3 room apartments.

Prices can vary depending on the type of accommodation chosen:

  • Halls of Residence €130 to €180 (+ utilities) per month
  • Rented Accommodation off-campus: €180 - €320++ per month
