Estonia
Institution Profile

University Homepage: http://www.ttu.ee/?lang=en

Founded in 1918 and the second largest university in Estonia, TUT has established a well-rooted engineering education tradition and is affectionately called the “MIT of the North”. Programmes were offered in mechanical, electrical, civil and hydraulic engineering, shipbuilding and architecture. In 1919, the school became the private Tallinn College of Engineering, which in 1920 was declared a state institution. In 1923, a State laboratory of Materials Testing opened for research work.

By the 1936, the school was granted the status of University, named Tallinn Technical Institute. The institute had two faculties: civil and mechanical engineering and chemistry and mining. In 1938, the name - Tallinn Technical University - was effective. In the following decades, the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Power Engineering and the Faculty of Control Engineering were respectively founded. So far, TUT has been the only university in Estonia providing academic education in all fields of engineering and technology.

Located at Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, TUT had in academic year 2005/2006 a student population around 11,000, including 52 international degree students, 59 exchange students from more than 20 countries. Academic staff totaled at 771, including research staff at 282.

Some of the internationally well-known alumni are:

  1. Tiit Vähi, former Estonian Prime Minister,
  2. Professor Paul Kogerman (1891-1951, former rector of TUT, Estonia’s former Minister of Education and the founder of the oil shale chemistry) Other famous alumni include
  3. Jüri Mõis, former Mayor of Tallinn,
  4. Jaak Leimann, former Minister of Economic Affairs, and
  5. Toomas Luman, President of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

TUT has bilateral agreements with 60 universities and institutes abroad, including The University of Toronto (Canada), Sunderland University of Technology (UK), Michigan State University (US), St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University (Russia) and University Pierre et Marie Curie (France) etc. Full list of partners available at http://www.iro.ttu.ee/inglise/Partners/agreements.html.
