The University of Zagreb is the oldest universities of the total six universities in Croatia as well as the oldest in South-Eastern Europe. Its roots date back to September 1669.
Today, the UZ is considered as one of the largest in Europe with regards to its student population and the courses available, with the most famous faculty being the School of Medicine. The university now consists of 29 faculties, three art academies and several organizational units. In AY 2004/2005, the student population was around 56000 for around 5600 faculty (research) and 2400 administrative staff.
The University of Zagreb is fully aware of the importance of development and promoting international university dimension of a diverse culture for academic creativity, success and imaginative ways of creating high quality standards of performance. Therefore, it now cooperates with more than 40 institutions of higher education throughout Europe and the world. Prominent alumni include Mr. Stjepan Mesic, the current President of Croatia, and former Prime Minister of Croatia, former President of Yugoslavia, and former President of the Croatian parliament.

Language of Instruction
Most lectures and seminars at the University of Zagreb are held in Croatian. Foreign students must be sufficiently proficient in Croatian in order to be able to follow a course of academic study. Some courses may be taught in other languages. For the language options, please refer to individual programmes. Students studying a course in a foreign language should at least have a basic knowledge of Croatian for everyday use and administrative needs.

Croaticum – Croatian for Foreigners
The Centre offers semester and monthly courses through the academic
year to students who wish to learn Croatian during their studies at the
University of Zagreb. Semester courses include language exercises at the Department for Standard Croatian Language at three levels of language proficiency. All three levels can be compared to CEFRL (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages):
Beginners’ to B1, Intermediate to B2, and Advanced to C1.
Each year Croaticum also organizes its Little Summer School of
Croatian Language, Culture and Civilization lasting four weeks in July.

University School of Croatian Language and Culture
In co-operation with the Croatian Heritage Foundation the University of Zagreb organizes the University School of the Croatian Language and Culture in summer (July). The Summer School is designed for persons of Croatian background, as well as all other students interested in learning (more) about the Croatian language and culture. The four week program includes five days per week classroom instructions supplemented by a programme of information, contacts and cultural activities. There are three language courses: Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced, each of them divided into three levels. Culture lessons cover basic topics on Croatian history, arts, society and folklore.
