Institution Profile

University Homepage: http://www.ugent.be

The University of Ghent (UGhent) was initially founded as a Latin-speaking University in 1817 by the King of Netherlands. During those times, the official academic language was French; however UGhent was the first to adopt Dutch as its official academic language. Located in Flanders, the cultural and economic heart of Europe , UGhent is an active partner in national and international education, scientific and industrial cooperation. Its broad International perspective is what makes it stand apart from other universities in the region. UGhent is one of the best universities in the Low Countries .

Its student population has been increasing ever since the 1990s and currently has reached a size of 26000, which includes about 2000 international students. Not only is UGhent dedicated to professionalism and an open democratic teaching, it also aims to serve the community; its museums are collections ranging from the subjects of History to Botany and Zoology.

Ghent – Part of the Flemish Diamond

Ghent is part of the Belgian economic and demographic core area Antwerp-Brussels-Ghent, also known as the Flemish Diamond. Despite this, Ghent is still a historical city and traces of the Middle Ages can still be seen in many parts of the city. Churches, bridges and the port have been beautifully preserved and are one of Ghent's many attractions. Besides the historical sites in the city, Ghent has something for everyone, ranging from museums to shopping and an exciting nightlife.

Language of Instruction

With the exception of all foreign language courses, lectures at the UGhent are held in Dutch. There are some courses held in English. The University offers intensive Dutch courses before and during term time.
