Institution Profile

University Homepage: http://www.ua.ac.be

Initially founded as a High School in 1852, the University of Antwerp only gained its University status in 1965, making it a relatively new University. In 2003 the University of Antwerp merged with three local institutions and now is the third largest University in Flanders . The three campuses are spread across the city, form the historical city centre to the green belt of the south. Its student population is about 10000 of which 10% are international students (this percentage does not include exchange students).

The University is actively involved in many European and international education programs. It is also a member of the Utrecht-network, a European consortium for interuniversity co-operation. It receives a large number of foreign PhD students which contributes to its international environment on campus and reputation worldwide.

Antwerp , being the second largest port in Europe offers a large range of studies in the maritime field, mainly organized by the interdisciplinary Institute of Transport and Maritime Management. Antwerp 's location offers the opportunity for extensive research in that area for interested students.

Antwerp – World Charm City

Situated close to the Capital of Belgium and Europe, Antwerp offers many attractions. Known as a city of World Charm and modern convenience, visitors can enjoy the many superbly maintained historical sites and architecture which dates back to the 11 th century. Antwerp is also part of the Belgian economic and demographic core area Antwerp-Brussels-Gent, also known as the Flemish Diamond. Appropriately enough, the city's second largest industry is the trade in diamonds.
