UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA - DAVIS
United States of America
Institution Profile

Embracing a century of learning, discovery and engagement, UC Davis provides students with a rewarding undergraduate experience while preparing them for success after graduation. Students benefit from a wide range of academic and extracurricular programs, an interdisciplinary research community involved in local and global issues, and an abundance of opportunities to show leadership and make an impact on society. With a student body drawn from every state and more than 75 countries, UC Davis reflects and is enriched by cultural traditions from around the world.

UC Davis is characterized by a distinguished faculty of scholars, scientists and artists, a treasured sense of community, and dedication to innovative teaching, research and public service. UC Davis students prepare for graduate and professional school and careers through courses, work experiences and leadership training. Graduate and professional schools actively recruit UC Davis graduates. Within a year of graduation, 65 percent of undergraduates who earned degrees in June 2005 were working full time or were studying for or had completed a postgraduate degree. A large majority (86 percent) attended their first- or second-choice institution.

Ideally located, UC Davis is just 15 miles from the state capital and Sacramento International Airport, and 60 miles from the San Francisco Bay Area. Easily accessible by car, bus or train, these destinations offer vibrant urban communities, exceptional museums and internationally known attractions.

Housing Options

At UCD on-campus housing is very limited. Exchange students are responsible for finding their own housing, and strongly advised to find housing before arrival in Davis. There are a number of options available. Exchange students are encouraged to apply to be listed on the Education Abroad Programme (EAP) Reciprocity Student Waiting List and simultaneously research other housing options since a residence hall housing contract offer cannot be guaranteed. Students should plan to seek other UC housing and community housing and begin their housing search as early as possible. A residence hall housing contract will commit you to living in university housing though the end of the academic year. For more information, please refer to http://www.housing.ucdavis.edu/.

Other alternatives include campus apartments, cooperatives and community apartments of which can be found at the Housing website (http://www.housing.ucdavis.edu/).

Health insurance:

All students who attend US universities on exchange are required to purchase the health insurance recommended by their host university as part of the registration process. In addition, they can also purchase additional optional insurance from a private insurer for their term of study overseas. These short term optional insurance plans cover events such as personal accident, accidental medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation etc. At UCDavis, students are automatically enrolled in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan unless they complete a waiver form that provides proof of equivalent coverage, and it is approved. More information regarding the waiver and the insurance plan can be found at http://healthcenter.ucdavis.edu/insurance/ship0809/index.html.
