On-campus:
Students at Northwestern are fortunate to have a wide variety of living facilities available to them. Smaller undergraduate residences accommodate as few as 26 students; larger units house more than 600. Most rooms are doubles, but residences also contain single, triple, quadruple, and suite arrangements. Students may select a residential college, a coeducational residence hall, or a facility where all members are of the same sex. Some of the houses are older, ivy-covered residences; others are modern, recently built halls. Each building has its own character and spirit, and its own distinct advantages. In recent surveys, we have found that most students living in undergraduate housing feel that their particular residence is "one of the best places on campus to live."

Off-campus:
Northwestern University does not provide an apartment finding service. However there are listings to a number of web links of places that specialize in advertising places to rent or sub-lease (http://www.northwestern.edu/offcampus/).
Health Insurance:
All international students entering or continuing at Northwestern are required to hold valid health insurance. You may fulfill this requirement by enrolling in the insurance program available through the university or by enrolling in another program approved by the university.
Insurance plans in the United States for your dependents are limited and expensive. You are therefore advised, if at all possible, to seek appropriate coverage in your home country for your dependents before coming to the United States.
For more information, please refer to http://www.nuhs.northwestern.edu/insurance.html.
Visa Matters:
Visa processing times vary widely depending on the country and time of year, and some applications may undergo a rigid and time-consuming background check. If you are subject to a background check, there is little Northwestern can do to speed up the process. Therefore, we suggest scheduling your appointment as soon as you receive your DS-2019, no sooner.
U.S. consulates and embassies will issue J-1 visa stamps no earlier than 120 days prior to the start date listed on the DS-2019. Once you receive your visa, you may enter the US no earlier than 30 days prior to the program start date.
