Housing Options

On-campus Housing:
Campus housing is available on campus and in Oakland Community. Approximately 75 percent of students live in the University's twelve traditional residence halls, fifteen houses, ten apartment buildings, thirteen fraternity houses, and five sorority houses. All on-campus residential areas are located in close proximity to academic buildings. The Oakland Community Apartments are located within a 5-10 minute walk to campus. The university's shuttle bus services these areas on a regularly scheduled basis. As long as applications are received by the housing application deadlines, exchange students are guaranteed on-campus housing (http://www.housing.cmu.edu). Application forms for on-campus accommodation: http://www.housing.cmu.edu/Forms/

Off-campus Housing:
1, 2, 3+ bedroom apartments, studios, houses, etc. are available. Most current students recommend arriving several weeks before classes start so you have ample time to get settled before you become involved in academic life. A challenge for one-semester exchange students is that it can be difficult to find a landlord who will rent for one semester only; most leases are for a full year. August and early September mark the start of the academic year at 10 local colleges and universities in Pittsburgh; new leases are at a premium at this time.

Housing is reasonably priced in comparison with major US cities. Most rental leases start on the first of each month with the most common start dates being the first of June, July, August, and September. Information about off-campus accommodation can be obtained from the following sources:

Advertisements in local newspapers, such as Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Tribune Review, especially Sunday editions.

Health Insurance:
All students who attend US universities on exchange are required to purchase the health insurance recommended by their host university. They can also purchase additional optional insurance from a private insurer. Short term insurance plans cover personal accident, accidental medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation etc. Students should arrange for health insurance from their home country before departure or purchase the Student Health Plan from Student Health Services upon arrival to Pittsburgh.

Health Insurance is required by CMU.  Prior to your arrival on campus, the premium for the basic insurance plan will be applied to your invoice. You will be enrolled in that plan unless you choose to upgrade to a plan with better benefits or obtain a waiver from the Student Health Service by providing acceptable documentation of coverage by the deadline set by the Student Health Service.  For further information please visit: http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/oie/settlinginguides/insurance/index.html
