UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

| Institution Profile |
 |
|
The University of Arizona is a premier, student-centered research institution. Established in 1885 as the first university in the Arizona Territory and the state's only land grant institution, the UA embraces its three-fold mission of excellence in teaching, research and public service. Now in its second century of service to the state, the UA has become one of America's top 20 public research institutions. It is Arizona’s only member of the Association of American Universities, a prestigious organization that recognizes universities with exceptionally strong research and academic programs.
The University of Arizona resides on 380 acres in the heart of Tucson, Arizona. Tall palm trees, green grass and minimal motor traffic create the feel of an oasis. The UA's warm, colorful campus is in dramatic contrast to the industrial feel of many concrete-dominated institutions. The campus is home to hundreds of trees—a surprise to some who expect an arid desert. On the UA mall, "the" gathering place for students, a long swath of palm trees line grassy areas where students play volleyball, throw Frisbees and listen to live bands. Though the palms are the tallest of our trees, campus is home to an seemingly endless collection of desert-adapted and arid-land trees, many of which are more than 100 years old.
Buildings on campus range from the beloved, historical "Old Main," built in 1887, to modern residence halls with the latest conveniences and comforts. The Student Recreation Center is currently undergoing a big expansion. Most of the oldest campus buildings built before 1940 are in the western part of campus, known as the West Campus Historic District. Some buildings in this area were designed in the Roman Classical Revival Style and later the Italian and Spanish Romanesque Revival styles. Contributing to the richness of this area is its architectural variety, detail and ornamentation, as well as unique landscaping filled with mature botanical specimens from around the world.
