| Housing Options |
 |
|
Students coming to The University of Calgary have a number of different options for housing. Many exchange students choose to live in the university residence halls due to the convenience of living on campus. In Residence, students do not need to worry about finding furniture, or even cooking in some cases, as there is a Dining Centre on campus to purchase meals. It is also possible for students to live off-campus in either an apartment or a house.
On-campus:
Many exchange students choose Residence (Rez - for short) as their best option because it is a very social living environment that lets them meet both Canadian and other International students. Living in Rez is very convenient: it is close to classes and other services on campus, and the atmosphere is conducive to meeting people. However, there are different types and costs of residence that you should consider. Each type of residence has different qualities to offer to students.
Also available are 6 apartment style residences on campus. Each building has 3 floors and contains Studio, 2-bedroom, 4-bedroom,and 1-bedroom single apartments. Each partment has a kitchen, bathroom, and a common living area. Residents are usually 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students.
For more details, please go to www.ucalgary.ca/residence.
Off-campus:
Although the majority of international students choose to live on campus, at least during their first year, some do choose to live off campus. If you choose to live off-campus, you are responsible for finding your own accommodation therefore you will need to arrive earlier than would otherwise be necessary so that you can find a place to stay. Most accommodations become available the 1st of the month, so if you are coming for the fall semester, you should plan to be here by early August. Affordable housing in Calgary is very competitive, so you may have difficulty finding a place to live in your price range. Room and board generally means renting a room with a family who will provide meals as well. For a single student living off-campus the cost of rent ranges from $350 - $800 CDN per month, with an average cost of about $450 - $550 /month. The University of Calgary Students’ Union provides an Off-Campus Housing List on a weekly basis. This is a list of apartments, houses, and room and board housing available to students. The Housing List generally gives the cost, number of rooms available, and appliances included, as well as the location and a contact number. You can find a copy of the Housing List on the web at http://www.su.ucalgary.ca/ooch/listing.php.

Health Insurance:
All International Exchange Students studying at the University of Calgary need to make certain they have adequate medical insurance to cover any medical care while they are here. If students do not have an insurance plan they will be responsible for paying all costs for medical treatment themselves. For most exchange students, the simplest choice (and the one the International Student Centre recommends strongly) is to purchase a medical insurance plan in their home country. If you do arrive in Canada without insurance coverage, medical insurance providers are authorized to provide this service to those who apply within 5 days of arriving in Canada. An updated list is available at the International Student Centre (http://www.ucalgary.ca/cissa/exchangestudents/MedInsurance/)
