Our faculty is drawn from some of the most prestigious institutions in the world, and Queen's faculty members regularly receive international recognition and numerous teaching awards for their research and innovative contributions.
Queen's University is located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, a quintessential university community big enough to provide all the conveniences of modern life, but small enough for students, staff and faculty to feel instantly comfortable and at home. For more than a century-and-a-half, the stories of Queen's and Kingston have been inextricably entwined.

| Housing Options |
 |
|
If you are an exchange student attending Queen’s for one four-month term, you may experience difficulty in securing housing because of the length of your stay. This is particularly true for students coming for the fall term. For this reason, we strongly encourage students coming for a fall-only exchange to plan to arrive in Kingston in mid- to late August to begin their housing search. (The winter housing market normally has more options to choose from.)
On-campus:
Queen’s Residences have a limited number of one-term placements available in the two Residence buildings to which exchanges students are normally assigned. To research your Residence hall options more thoroughly before submitting your application, please visit Residence Hall Information (http://www.queensu.ca/quic/housing/residencehall.htm). If you are accepted to live in a Queen’s Residence hall and plan to come to Kingston/Queen’s earlier than the residence move-in date, you can apply to Residence Services to request early admission on or before August 23 for the Fall term and as early as possible for Winter term arrivals; there is a nominal cost involved for these extra days and some restrictions may apply.
Science 44 Co-op (co-ed) and Princess Louise Women's Residence are privately owned student-housing options. Both offer a limited number of one-term placements. To access the Princess Louise Women's Residence website please click on the Property Portfolio tab on the Varsity Properties website (http://www.varsityproperty.com/index.cfm).
Off-campus:
You may instead choose other off-campus accommodation. There are two databases that provide various types of available accommodation. The Queen’s Apartment and Housing Listing Service (http://www.queensu.ca/dsao/housing/alist1.htm) and the International Housing Office (IHO) Database (http://www.queensu.ca/quic/housing/database/index.htm). Both of these databases provide various categories of available accommodation. The categories and definitions include:
- House and Apartment - private living spaces that you do not share with any other tenants
- Shared Accommodation - a private room in a house or apartment, occupied by a number of students or tenants who share all common space (including bathroom(s), kitchen and eating area, living/recreation areas)
- Room (Queen’s Apartment and Housing) or Room in a Private Home (IHO) - a private room in a home usually occupied by the owner, where again bathroom(s), kitchen and eating area, living/recreation areas are often shared
- Faculty Units - generally more expensive accommodations offered by faculty who are on sabbatical or out of the city for an extended period of time, and who are looking to rent their space to visiting scholars or faculty
- You might also consider browsing through the Alma Mater Society (AMS) Marketplace. The AMS is the undergraduate student government at Queen’s and they have an online marketplace that you may find useful. You can view it by visiting the AMS Marketplace and accessing the “Housemates” section at the right side of the page (spaces have been posted under both "Available" and "Needed".
Health Insurance:
All Queen's international students residing in Ontario during their period of study must enroll in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) before being allowed to register. All international students attempting to pre-register or register through QCARD must complete a UHIP application to enroll/waive themselves and their family members who reside in Ontario before pre-registration can be completed. Participation in this plan is compulsory for exchange students.
For more information, please visit http://www.queensu.ca/quic/intlstu/uhip/index.htm.
