Victoria College was founded through an Act of Parliament in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and named in her honour. When the University of New Zealand system was dissolved in 1962, the College became independent and was renamed Victoria University in 1962. There are 4 campuses, namely Kelburn Campus, Te Aro Campus, Pipitea Campus and Karori Campus. Victoria is one of New Zealand’s leading centers of scientific teaching and research.


Academics

Academic Calendar:            

  • First Trimester: Late February to Mid-June
  • Second Trimester: Mid-July to Early November
  • Third Trimester: Mid-November to Mid-February (summer trimester with limited courses)

University’s faculties/schools:
Architecture and Design, Commerce and Administration, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, and Science

Full time students are required to be enrolled in at least 48 points per trimester, usually three or four courses (http://www.victoria.ac.nz/home/study/subjects/coursecatalogue.aspx)

 
Housing Options

On-campus accommodation:
There are 15 Halls of Residences available for international students at Victoria. Some provide meals while others are self-catered. The average monthly cost of a Hall of Residence is between NZ$690 to $1120, some including meals, electricity and phone costs. (http://www.vuw.ac.nz/st_services/accommodation/halls/available.aspx)

Off-campus accommodation:
If you chose not to live in a Hall of Residence, the Accommodation Service can assist you to find somewhere to live in the private market. The Accommodation Service has an online database which has a variety of accommodation options available. Victoria University has selected Student Safe University to be its insurance policy provider for 2007. Student Safe University offers excellent travel and health insurance at an affordable price.
