Tohoku University was established in Sendai in 1907, it is the third oldest former Imperial University after Tokyo and Kyoto. Tohoku University is well known for its open and progressive polices. Thus Tohoku University is known for its strong orientation toward academic research. In the years following its establishment, Tohoku University has grown into an institution that includes the fields of medicine, science, and engineering. The courses are taught in the Japanese Language.

Students are expected to complete 15 credit units (cu) per semester.
 
Housing Options

On-campus accommodation: There are 3 students’ dormitories. Fees arrange from 19 800 yen to 22 000 yen. Entrance fees is from 15 000 yen onwards. The Tohoku University International House is available for the stay of participants in this program at the rate of 5,900 yen per month. The rate does not include expenses for utilities, which typically amount to 15,000 yen per month.

Additional Information

The cost of living in Sendai is typically 80,000 yen per month.

Insurance:
The National Health Insurance Act requires all foreigners who are going to stay (or may possibly stay) in Japan for more than one year to join the National Health Insurance program. Accordingly, all foreign students have to join this program while staying in Japan. Otherwise, foreign students whose stay is less than a year are required to join any insurance in their home country.
