Mr Tan Kah Kee, the well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader, founded Xiamen University in 1921, making it the first university to be founded by an overseas Chinese in China.
Today, Xiamen University (XMU) is a comprehensive university ranked 23rd among the top 100 Chinese universities based on Sina Ranking 2009, with a total of three campuses, namely the Xiamen campus, the Zhangzhou campus and the Jimei campus, all set admidst picturesque sceneries. On top of the strong teaching force, Xiamen University also sports an excellent learning and teaching environment with its high speed information campus network.

Xiamen University is strong in Economics, Social Science, Law, History, Management, Science and Law.

Curriculum Structure

There is no limit on the number of modules per semester.

Exchange students can choose Chinese language modules from the Overseas Education College.


Medium of instruction for classes: Mandarin.

Housing Options

On-campus:
Students will be assigned accommodation at Nanguang 5 upon acceptance. Inform XMU at asao@xmu.edu.cn if you arrive after registration date.

Another alternative is Caiqingjie Building, with single occupancy. Student can check-in directly upon arrival and inform the receptionists that you are an exchange student. No pre-booking is required.

Additional Information

Consular / Visa Regulations

A student visa is required (F visa of 180 days for 1 semester exchange with no physical examination required and X visa for 1 year exchange)

Apply at the China Embassy with the admission notice and visa application form (JW202) issued by Xiamen University.


Health / Medical Insurance

Student should carry adequate accident and medical insurance coverage with provisions for emergency evacuation/rescuer’s expense and repatriation for both durations of studies in China and travels within/outside China.

Student can purchase a “Foreign Student Insurance” from Ping An Insurance Company of China, at RMB600 per year. The insurance covers any expenses incurred for medical services (outpatient services excluded), hospitalization and accidental injury. Airport Pick-up

Students have to submit the “Pick-up Confirmation” form to Overseas Student Affairs Office at osao@xmuedu.cn or by fax at: 86-592-2183663. The transport cost is RMB80. XMU will arrange student buddy for airport reception.

Alternatively, students can take a taxi from the airport to Caiqingjie Building (厦门大学蔡清洁楼) at a cost about RMB60-70 which takes around 30 minutes, or by train at RMB15-20 which takes around 20 minutes.


Official Transcripts

Before departure, exchange students are required to complete the “Course Report for Exchange Student” form and submit to the Overseas Student Affairs Office with signatures from the respective faculties or departments.

Transcript will be sent to NUS within 2 months from the start of the new semester.


Medical Report

Students have to submit a medical report upon registration.
