Tsinghua University was established in 1911 originally as "Tsinghua Xuetang," a preparatory school for students who would be sent by the government to study in universities in the United States. With a splendid legacy accumulated over the past 98 years, Tsinghua has retained its character and charm while promoting rigorous scholarship research, ensuring academic and educational prestige in China and abroad. Tsinghua is ranked 1st among the top 100 universities in China based on Sina Ranking 2009. It is ranked 56th based on the World University Ranking 2008. The University is strong in Engineering (ranked 1st in China), Management (ranked 2nd in China), Science, Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Tsinghua University is situated on several former royal gardens of the Qing Dynasty, surrounded by a few historical sites in northwest Beijing.

Restrictions for exchange students

MBA program and the Master of Law program are not open to exchange students.

Cross faculty modules are allowed but should not exceed 8 credits.

Housing Options

On-campus:
On-campus accommodation is available at the Zijing Foreign Student Apartments, located on the northeast side of the campus.

Students have to apply for accommodation online.

Off-campus:

If on-campus accommodation is not available, the student service centre will assist in providing contact information of some lodging agencies outside the university.

Additional Information

Consular / Visa Regulations

A student visa is required (F visa of 180 days for 1 semester exchange with no physical examination required and X visa for 1 year exchange)

Apply at the China Embassy with the admission notice and visa application form (JW202) issued by Tsinghua University.


Health / Medical Insurance

Student should carry adequate accident and medical insurance coverage with provisions for emergency evacuation/rescuer’s expense and repatriation for both durations of studies in China and travels within/outside China.

Exchange students are required to purchase a compulsory health insurance at RMB600 if they are staying more than half a year.


Airport Pick-up

A special pickup team will be organised during the recommended period. Details of the pickup will be made known to the students at a later date.


Official Transcripts

Will be ready in early March for semester 1 and mid October for semester 2.


Medical Report

Students have to submit a medical report upon registration.


Services Available to Students

Exchange students can participate in all activities with the local students.
