The University of Hong Kong (HKU), founded in 1911, is the oldest tertiary institution in Hong Kong and one of the best comprehensive universities in Asia. The campus is situated on the north-western slopes of Hong Kong Island between 50 to 150 metres above sea level and overlooks the wide sweep of Victoria Harbour.

Since its establishment in 1911, it has undertaken the mission of providing a holistic education, developing the intellectual and personal strengths of its students.  It is ranked 26th among the world’s top 200 universities conducted by the Times Higher Education, London, 2008.  The university’s strengths include Business & Economics, Arts, Engineering, Law and Science.

Curriculum Structure

Semester workload: 5 modules

Chinese language courses (Cantonese and Putonghua) of different levels and Chinese culture courses are offered to all exchange students at no charges.

Medium of instruction for classes: English, apart from courses offered by the School of Chinese.

Restrictions for exchange students

Courses offered by the Faculty of Law are only available to students majoring in Law in NUS.

For Architecture students: Applicants should have completed 1.5 to 2 years of relevant studies before applying. In addition to the usual application documents, students will be required to submit a portfolio and a letter of recommendation from a teacher in Architecture Design. Student can apply for 1 semester of exchange only.

Housing Options

On-campus:
Accommodation is available at one of the 13 halls.

Students have to submit an online application form at http://apps.cedars.hku.hk/residential_hall

Submit your application between May to August for semester 1 and October to December for semester 2. It is subjected to availability due to intense competition.

Off-campus:

The Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) provides advice/assistance in finding off-campus private housing.

Accommodation during Semester Break:

Available from early September to mid-June of the following year for whole-year lodging. No additional charges during semester break.

Additional Information

Consular / Visa Regulations

A student visa is required. The University of Hong Kong will assist in the visa application by acting as the local sponsor for exchange students.

Health / Medical Insurance

Students should carry adequate accident and sickness insurance coverage with provisions for emergency evacuation/rescuer’s expenses and repatriation for both durations of your studies in Hong Kong and travels within/outside Hong Kong.

HKU Health Service provides free primary health care to full-time students at the University’s out-patient clinic. Dental service is also available at a notional charge. Refer to http://www.hku.hk/uhs/student_medical_benefits.htm  for more details.


Airport Pick-up

Exchange students will be assigned with buddies who can meet at the airport and assist to settle into the residence. You will be invited to join the Programme upon acceptance.


Services Available to Students

Exchange students enjoy the same access as local students to university facilities such as libraries, sports centres, computer centre, university health services etc. Exchange students can also participate in activities organised by halls of residence and student society.
