The Chinese University of Hong Kong originated from three private post-secondary colleges - Chung Chi College, New Asia College and United College, which were all established after 1949. It is the only local tertiary institution in a collegiate system. It has a campus that covers 1.34 sq km of land, making it the largest campus in Hong Kong.

Since its establishment, the University has adopted bilingualism and biculturalism as the basis of teaching for the benefit of local and international students and scholars. It is ranked 42nd amongst the world’s top 200 universities conducted by the Times Higher Education, London, 2008. Its strengths lie in Business Administration, Social Sciences, Science, Law and Engineering.

NUS students are entitled to take up to 6 credit units of Chinese language courses, Putonghua or Cantonese, free of charge during exchange at CUHK. Refer to

Medium of instruction for classes: English.

Students are expected to be fluent in both written and spoken Chinese should you choose to pursue certain programs such as the Chinese Language & Culture.



Restrictions for exchange students

The courses offered by the following faculties are not available to exchange students:

  • Faculty of Education (except those offered by Department of Sports Science & Physical Education)
  • Faculty of Law
  • Courses with the prefix PHE (except those ending with an ‘X’)
  • Student Oriented Teaching (STOT) courses. STOT course codes start with a “0”

Housing Options

Exchange students will be assigned accommodation at one of the 4 College Dormitories upon acceptance. They will share a double or triple occupancy room with local students.

Exchange students can apply for extension and pay for additional charges if they plan to stay longer than the check-out dates. The final decision rests with the affiliated hostels.

Additional Information

Consular / Visa Regulations

A student visa is required. CUHK will assist in the visa application by acting as the local sponsor for exchange students. Please submit the application form and required documents to the Office of Academic Links upon approval of admission.

Health / Medical Insurance

Student should carry adequate accident and medical insurance coverage with provisions for emergency evacuation/rescuer’s expense and repatriation for both durations of studies in Hong Kong and travels within/outside Hong Kong.
