NUS-Wuhan University Summer Programme
What is the programme about?
The NUS-Wuhan University Summer Programme is a customized 4-week summer programme where NUS faculty members will travel with the students and teach courses together with the professors from Wuhan University.
The 2013 NUS-Wuhan University Summer Programme will be held from 20 May to 15 June 2013. This intensive 4-week programme aims to provide a general understanding of China by focusing on topical aspects of both historical and contemporary issues. Topics that will be discussed include Chinese cultural traditions, Chinese world order, Chinese economy, environmental issues and legal system in contemporary China.

Wuhan University is one of the top universities in China. Founded in 1893, it is one of the oldest Chinese universities and its campus is famous for its beautiful scenery and lake. It is located in Hubei Province's capital Wuhan. Important cities such as Beijing and Tianjin in the north, Guangzhou and Hong Kong in the south, Shanghai and Hangzhou in the east, and Chengdu and Xi’an in the west can be found within a 1,200km radius of Wuhan. It is known as “the thoroughfare to 9 provinces”. With the strategy of “the Rise of China” by the Chinese central government, Wuhan has become a promising city and an ideal land for business and investment.
What is the academic content?
Aims to provide a general understanding of China by focusing on topical aspects of both historical and contemporary issues. Topics that will be discussed include Chinese cultural traditions, Chinese world order, Chinese economy, environmental issues and legal system in contemporary China. The summer programme is divided into 4 parts and co-taught by professors from both NUS and Wuhan University:
Part 1: Economy and Enterprise (Prof Liu Xueyuan, WHU)
Part 2: Law and Order (Prof Nie Jianqian & Prong Kong Lingjie, WHU)
Part 3: Historical and Cultural Traditions (Prof Lee Cheuk Yin, NUS)
Part 4: Environmental Management and Change (Prof Victor Savage, NUS)
Students will attend lectures and seminars at the Wuhan University together with students from Wuhan University. Besides visits to local historical sites, museums, study trips outside Wuhan will also be organized, including fieldtrip to Suzhou to study the preservation of the old city area and the emergence of the Suzhou Industrial Park; and excursions to Shanghai to study the transformation of modern Chinese.
Notes: All academic lectures and seminars will be conducted in English. Chinese language courses, which are optional, will be conducted in both Chinese and English will not be counted towards the CA.

What is the student accommodation?
Student will be provided with accommodation at the Wuhan University guesthouse. Each room is facilitated with two single beds, writing desk, TV, telephone, internet access and attached bathroom.
