What is this programme about?

Experience an enriching summer at one of the largest and oldest national universities in Japan! Tohoku University offers undergraduates around the world an opportunity to immense themselves in the Japan’s rich  and diverse culture. The eight-to-ten day program embraces a line-up of exciting lectures with humanitarian and sociological orientation. These are aimed not only to develop students’ international perspectives but also to cultivate their understanding of other cultures.

Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.


What is the academic content?

All academic courses offered during the program are conducted in English. Students will select 7 out of 9 modules in order to fulfill the requirements (14 hours). The modules are designed for (but not restricted to) undergraduates majoring in liberal arts and social sciences. However, many courses cross over other disciplines such as science and engineering. The program is hoped to provide students with comprehensive analytical skills.

Academic credits MAY be available. Credit for the programme is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.


What does it include?

The program includes lectures, laboratory visits and field trips.


What is the student accommodation?

Off-campus accommodations will be ten-minutes away by bus from Kawauchi campus, where most activities are held during the program. Each student will be accommodated in a furnished individual bedroom with a unit bathroom.


How much does it cost?

The tuition fee is free but students is expected to pay for their airfare, accommodation and living expenses.

Is financial assistance available?

Yes. Students can apply for the NASA Enhancement Bursary* (by Financial Need) or NASA Enhancement Scholarship (by Merit). More information here.

What are the eligibility requirements?

 

  • Students should not be in their graduating semester prior to participating in this programme.
  • CAP of 3.0 and above.

 

Is a visa required?

Yes. Tohoku University will assist in providing documentation needed to apply for a visa.

Students are to consult the Embassy of Japan in Singapore to determine if a visa is required and to apply for an entry visa if needed.

How do I apply?

Application Deadline: 13 March 2013.

All applications are to be submitted via OPAS.

Your home faculty will conduct the initial round of selection and nominate selected students to IRO. Students will be notified by IRO on the final status of their application by March 2013.
