Summer Programme at LMU - "Approaching the European Union"


What is this program about?

The “Approaching the European Union” summer programme is conducted by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) through their summer school arm, the Munich International Summer University (MISU).  This is a fee-paying programme that is customised for NUS and approved by FASS as a European Studies module.  The programme is conducted in English, with a focus on the history, development and key features of the European Union as a political entity.  Program for summer 2012 will take place in Munich (Germany) and include field trips to Prague (capital of the Czech Republic), Vienna (capital of Austria), and Bratislava (Capital of Slovakia).


When does the programme take place?

Early to mid-June for three weeks.


Where does the programme take place?

The main programme will be held in Munich at the MISU / LMU campus.  Field trips will be made to neighboring cities, e.g. Prague (capital of the Czech Republic), Vienna (capital of Austria), and Bratislava (Capital of Slovakia).


What is the academic content?

During the programme, students will attend lectures on European history, the political and economic aspects of European integration, explore cross-cutting issues affecting the EU, and study the interactions between the EU and the rest of the world, including China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Classes Schedule

Classes will be conducted in the morning in 2 sessions of 1.5 hour each from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.  Extracurricular activities and visits will follow in the afternoon.

Reading material (approximately 10 – 15 pages) will be distributed a day before and students are expected to study the reading material in preparation for classes the next day.


Course Assessment

Students will be assessed for their participation in seminars, oral presentation and written assignments. Every student will receive an official transcript after having successfully completed all program requirements. The transcript will show course name, contact hours, number of acquired credits and grades.

Academic credit transfer MAY be available. Students interested in obtaining credit transfer must contact their NUS SEP coordinator to enquire about credit mapping process. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.


What does the programme include?

What is the student accommodation?

Students will be accommodated in student residential halls (single rooms) while in Munich, which will come with shared kitchen facilities.  Accommodation while on field trips will be on twin/triple-sharing basis.


How much does it cost?

The programme fee of 1,500 euro covers the cost of tuition, accommodation and field trips.  See table below for an estimate of costs.

Is financial assistance available?

Yes.  Students with financial needs can submit their application for funding to IRO by completing and submitting an application form here.

What are the eligibility requirements?

 
  • Any Faculty
  • CAP of 3.0 and above
  • Full time status during the program
  • Must have completed at least one year of University study by the time program starts

 

Is a visa required?

Singaporeans holding a Singapore passport will not require a visa to participate in the programme.  Passport holders of other countries should find out if they require a visa by contacting the German embassy in Singapore.
