What is this programme about?
The Summer Institute “Asia as the Global Future” course has been offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong since 2006.
This unique undergraduate programme on Aisan Studies aims not only to enhance students’ awareness of the importance of Asia in world affairs, but also improve their capacities to apply the materials and ideas to which they have been exposed in difference settings.

What is the academic content?
Hong Kong stands as a bridge between China and the world. With a long history of intellectual engagement with the Mainland, Hong Kong has unparalleled access to scholars and resources in the field of Greater China studies. Through a combination of lectures and seminars under four major themes: “Asia in the World”; “Economic Transformation and the Challenges of Growth”; “Politics and Human Well-being”; and “Society, Culture and Heritage”, students will be exposed to key issues in Asian affairs. A series of fieldtrips in Hong Kong and special study tours to Macau, Beijing and Seoul will supplement the classroom-based learning. Renowned businessmen, community leaders, and scholars will be invited as guest speakers.

The study tours will be arranged in collaboration with the University of Macau and Yonsei University. In order to enhance deeper understanding of local culture and multicultural interaction, local postgraduate students will be invited to be mentors.
Academic credit MAY be available. Credit for the programme is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.

Is financial assistance available?
Yes. Students can apply for the NASA Enhancement Bursary* (by Financial Need) or NASA Enhancement Scholarship (by Merit). More information here.

What are the eligibility requirements?
Students should not be in their graduating semester prior to participating in this programme.
CAP of 3.0 and above.
Is a visa required?
Yes. HKU will assist in providing documentation needed to apply for a visa.
Students are to consult the Embassy of China in Singapore to determine if a visa is required and to apply for an entry visa if needed.
