Grenoble Institute of Technology (Grenoble INP) Summer School


What is this program about?

The Grenoble Institute of Technology (Grenoble INP) Summer School in Nanotechnologies is 5 week summer programme held in Grenoble in collaboration with École Polytechnique Fédérale De Lausanne (EPDL) and Politecnico di Torino. Participants will take a series of courses in the study of nanotechnology (which will involve lab work in a clean-room environment) and intercultural communication classes. There will also be visits to the European Synchrotron, the world largest nanotechnology research centre, the Mintatec research centre and ST Microelectronics facilities.  The Grenoble INP Student Board will also organize social activities for the participants on weekends. Where does the programme take place?

The Grenoble INP Summer School in Nanotechnologies is hosted by the Grenoble Institute of Technology (Grenoble INP). Grenoble INP has a major influence in the world of innovation, and is renowned as a Global Research Centre. Grenoble INP has a great atmosphere to study and to meet people while discovering a new culture. Around 65,000 French and international students study at the Grenoble Campus, in an exceptional and challenging environment. By mixing training activities in key technologies, research and industrial partnership, Grenoble Institute of Technology meets today’s major challenges, e.g. Micro and Nanotechnologies, Energy, Digital World, Environment, and Industry.

The programme takes place in city of Grenoble, France. Situated at the foot of the French Alps, the city of Grenoble is a major scientific centre of Europe, especially in the fields of physics, computer science and applied mathematics. The city has a high concentration of research and technology labs.

Grenoble is an old French city with modern attitudes and located 3 hours by train Southeast of Paris.


What is the academic content?

The 5-week program will include the following:

  • NanoPhysics (12hrs)
  • NanoBiology I  (12hrs)
  • Microsystems (12hrs)
  • Creativity and Innovation in Micro & Nanotechnologies (9hrs)
  • NanoEthics (seminar 2hrs)
  • Intercultural Communication (12hrs)


Elective Modules

NanoBiology

 
  • NanoBiology II (12hrs)
  • Practical work: Lab work in clean room (Lab on chip) (16hrs) - 12 students


NanoElectronics

 
  • NanoElectronics Devices and Circuits (12hrs)
  • Practical work: Lab work in clean room (Solar Cell processing) (20hrs) - 24 students


Social Program

 
  • Intercultural communication (15hrs)
  • Survival French (optional, 10hrs)
  • Outdoor activities
  • International Week End
  • Oenology classes
  • Visits of the European Synchrotron, Minatec Research centre, Institut Louis Néel, and EPFL Lausanne and Politecnico campus and facilities

Grenoble INP will award the Summer School 6 ECTS. Academic credit transfer MAY be available. Credit for the programme is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must contact their SEP coordinators to enquire about credit mapping. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.


What does the programme fee include?

The programme fee of €1,100 includes:

 
  • Participation in all courses
  • Participation in excursions and trips around Grenoble
  • Monthly trolley/bus line tickets
  • Spacious rooms in a student's renovated Residence Hall
  • Wireless internet access
  • Health insurance
  • One-day visit to campuses of Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Politecnico di Torino (Turin, Italy)

 

What is the student accommodation?

Participants will be housed in single-room accommodation at a student residence hall for the duration of the programme.  Wireless Internet connection will be provided.


How much does the programme cost?

The programme fee of 1,100 euro covers the cost of tuition, accommodation and field trips.  See table below for an estimate of costs.

Is financial assistance available?

Yes.  Students can apply for a study travel grant from the International Relations Office.


Number of placements available?

Places are strictly limited. NUS students are encouraged to apply early to secure their places in the program.


What are the eligibility requirements?

 
  • Undergraduate students from Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science
  • CAP of 3.0 and above
  • Must have completed at least 1 year of University study by the start of program

 

Is a visa required?

Singaporeans holding a Singapore passport will not require a visa to participate in the programme.  Passport holders of other countries should find out if they require a visa by contacting the French embassy in Singapore.

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have proper entry documents for all countries they plan to visit as part of this programme!


How do I apply?

Application Deadline: 8 February 2013.

However, students are strongly encouraged to apply as early as January to secure a seat in the program. Grenoble INP might close application early when the maximum number of participants has been reached.
