Program Expenses

Students’ commitment will be to cover their own airfare (SGD2,000+).  Those who have difficulties with this sum should seek advice from IRO, and some arrangements for work-study may be arranged in NUS before departure.

Students will continue to pay NUS tuition fees and mandatory miscellaneous fees during the year they spend in Yale.

Students will receive a substantial scholarship from NUS for their Yale tuition fees, room, board, books and personal expenses.  The sum for books and personal expenses will be based on Yale’s recommendation of the expenditure that a student will normally incur.

Accommodation

Students will be assigned to one of the 12 residential colleges at Yale. The Yale residential college system is one of most distinctive features of undergraduate life in Yale.  Find out more about residential college living at http://yalecollege.yale.edu/content/residential-colleges.

Application Criteria

The program is open to students from FASS, BIZ, SoC, FoE, FoS and USP, who are currently in the 2nd year of study (will go to Yale in the 3rd year).

Applicants should possess the following qualities:

  • Good academic performance – CAP of 4.0 and above at the point of application
  • Well-rounded, with a wide range of interests, skills, and/ or talents
  • Active engagement beyond the classroom, to take advantage of Yale’s vibrant extracurricular community
  • Deep commitment to and genuine appreciation for your extracurricular pursuits
  • Great desire and ability to stretch the limits of your talents
  • Outstanding motivation to be a leader in what you choose to pursue, for the greater good

TOEFL or IELTS is required for international students who come from a non-English education system.  Only students who had the last two years of instruction in English (e.g. students who took A levels in Singapore) will be exempted from this requirement.  Information on the IELTS test dates is available here.  The final date for submission of IELTS results to IRO is 21 November 2012 if you are nominated by your faculty.

As this is a one year program and students are required to take courses both in and out of your majors, applicants should ensure that they are able to map their modules or be prepared to graduate late.  As a liberal arts college, Yale would like students to take advantage of the range of courses that are available, to achieve both breadth across the curriculum and depth in your selected area of study.

Students typically take 9 courses (4 in the fall and 5 in the spring) during the year in Yale.  Students are also required to come back to NUS after the Y-VISP for at least one regular semester and complete their degree.

Scholarship holders should check with their scholarship provider if they are allowed to go on this program before applying.
