Tokyo Institute of Technology Academic Cooperation Agreement Programme

What is this programme about?

Tokyo Institute of Technology is a leading Japanese university in science and technology with an outstanding history since 1881.

Tokyo Tech offers undergraduate students (second year or above) an opportunity to study and research under the guidance of an academic advisor. They can also take additional classes under the permission of their instructor and academic advisor.

What is the academic content?

Students can take part in research projects covering a wide range of subjects from School of Science, Engineering, Bioscience and Biotechnology. They are hoped to cultivate creative, analytical and critical skills as well as im-depth knowledge about the disciplines that they have researched on.

Academic credit MAY be available. Credit for the program is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.


What does the programme fee include?

Under a special arrangement with Tokyo Tech, the entrance, admission and tuition fees are waived.


What is the student accommodation?

There is no guarantee that students can stay on campus during the period of the program because of limited availability. However, Tokyo Tech will try to secure on-campus dormitory for international students.  They will receive a dorm guide around 1 month before their entrance.

The duration students can stay is within their research period only. On the last month of the program, they are required to vacate their rooms by the 25th.

Students can make necessesary payment when entering the dorm or at a convenience store.

Here is one of the dorms that students can be accepted:

 Komaba International Student House:  4-5-29 Komaba, Meguro-ku, Tokyo
 Rent Fee:  32,200 JPY/month
 Internet Fee:  2,700 JPY/month
 
Payment Method:
 take necessary procedures when entering dormitory, or transfer at a convenience store
 Facilities of dormitory:
 Room: Desk, chair, bookshelf, desk light, bed, bedclothes, closet, curtain, unit bath, air conditioner, refrigerator, telephone, internet connection
 Dormitory:  Kitchen, dining room, laundry room, lounge, multipurpose room, study room, conference room, counseling room, training room, art room, music room, Japanese room, multipurpose hall etc.

Is financial assistance available?

Students can apply for the NASA Enhancement Bursary* (by Financial Need) or NASA Enhancement Scholarship (by Merit).

What are the eligibility requirements?

 
  • Students from Engineering and Science majors, who have completed at least one year of study at NUS prior to participating in this programme.
  • Students should not be in their graduating semester prior to participating in this programme. CAP of 3.0 and above.
  • Fluent speaker of English or Japanese (As for English, international recognized test results (e.g. TOFLE, IELTS, TOEIC) are recommended.

 

Is a visa required?

Yes. Tokyo Tech will assist in providing documentation needed to apply for a visa.

Students are to consult the Embassy of Japan in Singapore to determine if a visa is required and to apply for an entry visa if needed.

How do I apply?

Application deadline is 17 January 2013, 6.00 pm.

Applications and Required Documents:

 
  • Students are to complete the IRO Programme Application Form.
  • Submit your completed application form (with unofficial transcript) via email to irojt@nus.edu.sg.  
  • Follow the application process for Tokyo Tech as listed on this webpage
    (Please state student status as "International Exchange Students (Other Participants)").
  • Search for an advisor at Tokyo Tech and contact him/her for approval
  • Submit all required materials to NUS IRO.
  • Acceptance Letter  and Certificate Of Eligibility are sent from Tokyo Tech
  • Apply for  visa
  • Orientation documents and dormitory information will be sent to students.
