International Research Attachment Programmes (i-RAP)


IRO offers opportunities for students to broaden and enhance their undergraduate experiences through global research attachments under the mentorship of world class researchers. Students will have the chance to live in another culture and conduct research in a different academic/research environment through summer research exchanges offered by NUS’ partner universities.

USA: California Institute of Technology Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) immerses participants into the various aspects of conducting real-world research. Working under the guidance of seasoned research faculty, students experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity.

Canada: Research Attachment with Concordia University

Concordia has well recognized programs and ranks highly in Canada and internationally in fields such as Fine Arts, Social Science, Journalism and Engineering. The University's John Molson School of Business is consistently ranked within the top ten Canadian business schools and within the top 100 worldwide. 2nd and 3rd year NUS students from any faculty are eligible.

École Polytechnique (ParisTech) Summer Research Attachment Program

The Ecole Polytechnique – NUS International Research Attachment Program gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to carry out a 3 to 6-month internship in laboratories at Ecole Polytechnique. The Program will give NUS students the opportunity to work alongside researchers of Ecole Polytechnique.

International Research Attachment Program with the University of Bonn

The University of Bonn is a public research university located in Bonn, Germany. With a student body of approximately 28,000 students, the University of Bonn is one of the major universities in Germany with strengths in mathematics, physics, economics, neuroscience, medical genetics, and chemical biology among others.

International Research Attachment with INSA Lyon

The INSA Lyon – NUS International Research Attachment Program gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to carry out a 5 to 6-month internship in laboratories at INSA Lyon.

USA: Summer Research Attachment with Northwestern University

Participate in a summer research experience at Northwestern University and spend up to 12 weeks conducting research under the tutelage of established researchers. With multi-disciplinary research opportunities on offer, students will have the wonderful opportunity to broaden their horizons during the NUS mid-year academic break.

International Research Attachment Programme with Ulm University

Ulm University focuses mainly on natural sciences, life sciences and engineering. Basic and applied research is very strong at the University, ranked between the top 10 German Universities. Research groups are set up internationally, the language in the labs is English. Host departments have substantial experience in hosting students from abroad.The International Research Attachment to Ulm University offers NUS students the opportunities to conduct short-term research under the supervision of researchers at Ulm University.

NUS - Humboldt University of Berlin International Research Exchange Program

Two research internship positions will be available at WISTA , science and technology park in Adlershof. Internships will be in the fields of Optics and Laser, and Biotechnology and Chemistry.

Interns will be working in associated businesses and gaining experience in WISTA Management GMBH.

NUS - Imperial College London Summer International Research Exchange

Consistently rated amongst the world’s best universities, Imperial College London came 7th in the QS World University Rankings in 2011.  Imperial College London is a science-based institution with a reputation for excellence in science, technology, medicine and engineering. It is one of the most male-dominated universities in the UK.

USA: Summer Research Attachment with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The NUS – Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Summer International Research Exchange provides NUS students with the opportunity to carry out individual research projects with faculty mentors at MIT. This programme allows undergraduates to broaden their research experience with one of NUS’ prestigious partner institutions, and to develop skills in independent thinking and creative ideas. Successful applicants will collaborate with the MIT mentor to define and develop a research project, and conduct their projects over 9 weeks in the summer.

Tokyo Institute of Technology Academic Cooperation Agreement Programme

Tokyo Tech offers undergraduate students (second year or above) an opportunity to study and research under the guidance of an academic advisor. They can also take additional classes under the permission of their instructor and academic advisor.

USA: UC Davis GREAT Summer Research Program 2013

The UC Davis Global Research Experience in Advanced Technologies (GREAT) Summer Research Program offers the best undergraduate students from leading universities, the opportunity to gain valuable research experience in science and engineering during the summer at the University of California, Davis.

University of Tokyo Research Internship Programme (UTRIP)

UTRIP stands for the "University of Tokyo Research Internship Program." This program was launched by the Graduate School of Science (GSS) of the University of Tokyo (one of the world's leading research-education universities) as part of its campaign begun in June 2010 for promoting the internationalization of the GSS by inviting talented young students from abroad. UTRIP is an intensive summer research program targeted at undergraduates who have a keen interest in pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in the future.

USA: Summer Research Attachment with Brown University

Participate in a summer research experience at Brown University, one of the top Ivy League institutions in the US. With multi-disciplinary research opportunities on offer, students will have the wonderful opportunity to broaden their horizons during the NUS mid-year academic break. Selected students will be eligible to receive a scholarship under the Santander Undergraduate Research Exchange (SURE) Programme, sponsored by Banco Santander.
