Canada: Research Attachment with Concordia University


What is this program about?

Concordia University is a large, urban, English-language institution, located in Montreal with a diverse student body of 45,000 undergraduate students.  The University has well recognised programmes and ranks highly in Canada and internationally in fields such as Fine Arts, Social Science, Journalism and Engineering. The University's John Molson School of Business is consistently ranked within the top ten Canadian business schools and within the top 100 worldwide.


When does the programme take place?

Summer and semester, for a minimum of 2 months


Where does the programme take place?

Concordia University, Montreal, Canada

Montreal is consistently rated as one of the world's most livable cities, was called "Canada's Cultural Capital" by Monocle Magazine and recently was named a UNESCO City of Design. Historically the commercial capital of Canada, it continues as an important centre of commerce, aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, design, culture, tourism, film and world affairs. Although French is the city's official language and is also the language spoken at home by 55.1% of the population, English is largely spoken.


What is the research content?

Multi-disciplinary across faculties.

Academic credit MAY be available. interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.


What is the student accommodation?

Students participating in this programme are not eligible for student housing at Concordia, and must locate their own housing.

Is financial assistance available?

Students who are not selected to receive the SURE Programme award are eligible to apply for the NASA Enhancement Bursary or Scholarship. For more information, visit this webpage:

Number of placements available?

There is no pre-determined limit on the number of placements available to NUS students.


What are the eligibility requirements?

 
  • Undergraduates from any faculty who have completed at least two years of study at NUS prior to participation in this programme.
  • Should not be in their graduating semester prior to participation in this programme.
  • CAP of 3.0 and above.

 

Is a visa required?

Yes. Once students have obtained an invitation from a Concordia professor, Concordia International Office will issue a letter of invitation and instructions on applying for a work permit. Students are to consult the High Commission of Canada to Singapore to determine the specifics of the visa application procedures.

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have proper entry documents for all countries they plan to visit as part of this programme!


How do I apply?

Students must apply at least 3 months prior to the intended start-date for the research attachment.

Applications and Required Documents:

 
  • Students are responsible for initiating contact with a faculty member at Concordia University to secure a research position at a research centre/ lab and obtaining a written invitation from the host.

  • Upon receiving confirmation of acceptance by a Concordia faculty member for the research attachment, students are to submit the following documents via email to: irook@nus.edu.sg
    - NUS IRO Programme Application Form.
    - Latest unofficial NUS transcript.
    - Applications are to reach IRO before 1st April for summer and fall semester attachments, and before 1st October for spring semester attachments.
