International Research Attachment Program with the University of Bonn
What is this program about?
The Graduate School BIOTECH-PHARMA, University of Bonn offers special lab internships for advanced young researchers. The Undergraduate Laboratory Internship ULI program is an excellent opportunity for outstanding undergraduate students to actively participate in scientific research projects in the field of pathophysiology and pharmacology of diseases as well as the development of novel therapies. BIOTECH-PHARMA is an interdisciplinary school with input from the Medical Faculty and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Bonn, and non-university organizations - CAESAR (Center of Advanced European Studies and Research), BfArM (Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices) - as well as industrial partners. Internships at Biotech-Pharma will last for 8 weeks. Research attachment is suitable for students from Department of Biological Sciences, Pharmacology, and Toxicology.

When does the program take place and for how long?
Summer vacation (May – August) or within German regular terms, e.g. October – March and April – September.
The research attachment is between 2 -3 months. A longer attachment (up to 6 months) is possible.
Selected students will negotiate with the host research group the starting date and the length for the attachment.
Students might consider participating in a one-month orientation course including intensive German language training in March or September; or the International Summer Course for German language, Literature and Culture prior to starting their internship period.
Where does it take place?
Bonn, Germany
The University of Bonn was founded almost 200 years ago and is considered to be one of Germany's and indeed Europe's most important institutes of higher education. As home of learning to over 27,000 students, the University of Bonn is known for its strengths in mathematics, physics, economics, neuroscience, medical genetics, and chemical biology among others.
What is the program content?
Academic credit MAY be available. Credit for the internship is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping and complete the credit transfer application before embarking on the program. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.
What is the student accommodation?
University of Bonn will support students in finding housing, and arranging for insurance and for visa.
If students wish to request University of Bonn to arrange for housing, rooms are available on a monthly basis. Housing booking takes place at the beginning of most months starting from March 1st, April 1st, June 1st, July 1st, September 1st and October 1st.
Students are strongly encouraged to pay the semester social fee of the university and get properly enrolled. Being enrolled at University of Bonn will provide the students with access to some of the activities organized by the University for international students, allow the students take summer German language classes, and mingle with other students on campus. Having a student status with University of Bonn will also provide the students with a public transportation pass for the whole state of North Rhine Westphalia. Students may join a semester late and leave early. However, in order to save money students should try to arrange their stay within one semester (October-March and April-September).

Is financial assistance available?
Yes. Students can apply for NASA Enhancement Bursary/Scholarship from the International Relations Office.
Candidates accepted by Biotech-Pharma will receive a total of 900 Euros financial support from Biotech-Pharma for the internship period of 2 month.

3 vacancies, one each in pharmacology, physiology and medicinal chemistry

Is a visa required?
Yes. University of Bonn will assist in providing documentation needed to apply for a visa.
Students are to consult the Embassy of Germany in Singapore to determine if a visa is required and to apply for an entry visa if needed.

How do I apply for the program?
Students need to be recommended/selected by supervisors at NUS. Professors interested in sending their students are to contact Ms. Elisabeth Mies-Klomfass (biotech-pharma@uni-bonn.de) to discuss whom to send and other questions.
