NUS - Humboldt University of Berlin International Research Exchange Program

 

What is this program about?

Humboldt University of Berlin offers NUS undergraduate students opportunities to intern with companies at WISTA science and technology park in areas of Optics and Laser, Biotechnology and Chemistry. In addition to internship opportunities at WISTA, those interested in obtaining research experience can embark on a semester long or a shorter research attachment at laboratories of Physics Institute, Department of Chemistry, and Department Mathematics at Humboldt University.


When does the program take place?

Summer vacation (May - early August)
During German Semesters (1st October - mid February and 1st April - end July).

Students who want to combine their internships with free German language courses at the university (4 hours of teaching per week at all levels) are required to stay for the duration of the language course  (early April until mid July or early October until mid February).

Students who are only doing an internship/research attachment without a language course do not need to follow the dates stated above. However, the internship and research attachment should be two months minimum.


Where does the programme take place?

Berlin was the capital of Prussia until 1945 and the capital of Germany between 1871 and 1945 and again since the reunification of Germany on October 3, 1990.

Wista Technology Park in Adlershof. Adlershof is known today as the "City of Science, Technology and Media" and it is located southeastern Berlin. Adlershof is one of Germany’s most successful high-tech locations. Since 1991, this integrated city of science, business and media has grown to an area of 4.2 square kilometers and is home to more than 740 businesses employing 12,700 people. 

A science and technology park lies right at the heart of Adlershof. With modern facilities for scientists and business founders alike, Berlin Adlershof connects people and has several services to choose from. More than 400 tech-oriented businesses with some 4,280 employees and 12 non-university research institutes with 1,460 employees – 795 of them scientists – have settled in Adlershof. In addition, the two natural science faculties of Berlin’s Humboldt University that are located in Adlershof have six institutes with 6,400 students and 865 employees, including 130 professors.

With more than 138 media companies, Adlershof is Berlin’s top media location. And it is comfortably surrounded by an ensemble of living quarters, shops, hotels, restaurants and a 66-hectare park.


What is the research content?

Academic credit MAY be available. Credit for the internship is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.

Internship Opportunities at WISTA Technology Park

Two internship positions will be available at WISTA technology park in Adlershof. Internships will be in the fields Optics and Laser, and Biotechnology and Chemistry. Interns will be working in associates business and gaining management experience in WISTA Management GMBH. Internship will be in English and German language skill is not required.

Research Opportunities for Undergraduate Students at Humboldt University of Berlin

With 29 Nobel Laureates, Humboldt University of Berlin is renowned for its excellence in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine. Among its reputable Physics Nobel winners are Albert Einstein, and Max Planck. In addition to internship opportunities at WISTA Technological Park, NUS students can choose to participate in a research attachment at the Physics Institute and other natural science departments including Chemistry, and Mathematics. Students are encouraged to browse the websites of the respective departments and identify faculty members with whom they are interested in working.


What is the student accommodation?

Students who wish to stay in student accommodation at HU are advised that they can only rent rooms from the start of term (1st October or 1st April). Students do not need to rent a room for the duration of the whole term unless they are taking a language course. Rent termination is only allowed at the end of each month.

Humboldt University will support students in securing housing (if needed).

Students are responsible for finding their own off-campus accommodation if their internship falls outside the regular semesters. Humboldt University will provide students with contact addresses they can turn to in order to find off-campus accommodation.

Students are strongly encouraged to conduct their internship within German terms and get enrolled with Humboldt University to gain student benefits including affordable public transport fee and access to student housing.

Please note, these are estimated expenses and actual expenses may differ based on actual attachment length, price shifts and personal spending habits!


Is financial assistance available?

Yes. Students can apply for a study travel grant from the International Relations Office.

Students interested in applying for additional funding can approach the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) office in Singapore to be advised of available funds.

What are the eligibility requirements?

 
  • Any Faculty
  • Full time student during the attachment
  • CAP 3.0 or above
  • Completed at least one year of study by start of program

 

Is a visa required?

Yes. Humboldt University will assist in providing documentation needed to apply for a visa.

Students are to consult the Embassy of Germany in Singapore to determine if a visa is required and to apply for an entry visa if needed.

How do I apply?

Application Deadline: at least 3 months prior to intended start date. Application should be sent to iroctm@nus.edu.sg.

  • If the application is for an internship with companies in WISTA Technology Park the letter should indicate 1) The internship area of interest (Optics and Laser, Biotechnology or Chemistry); 2) Relevant knowledge and experience. 
  • If the application is for a research attachment the letter should indicate 1) The internship area of interest (Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics); 2) Names and contact details of three potential mentors ranked in order of preference.

Placement Process:

Applications once submitted to IRO will be forwarded to Humboldt University of Berlin for matching with an internship/ a research project at WISTA Technology Park, Physics Institute and other departments.
