Italy: NUS-Pier International Internship Programme


What is this programme about?

Established in 1970 in the province of Treviso, Italy, Pier Psa., is an Italian family-run company that has asserted itself as a protagonist in the high-end fashion industry. PIER has manufactured clothing for prestigious Italian and international fashion designers and brands including Azzedine Alaia, Balenciaga, Chloé, Dior, Dries Van Noten, Kris Van Assche, Lagerfeld, Nina Ricci, and Yves Saint Laurent.

A NUS undergraduate student will have the opportunity to intern at PIER in the province of Treviso, Italy for 6 months and involve in activities of various departments of the company to understand the process of making the garment from creation of the design and concept to release of the final products.

Internship duties will include the following:

 
  • Speaking to staff from various departments of the company to understand the company, its history, clients, and future strategy
  • Conducting research on new fashion patterns and motifs  as requested by fashion designers
  • Contributing inputs to the process of evaluating and choosing fabrics
  • Attending meetings with fabric suppliers
  • Attending garment fittings
  • Creating corporate presentations in English and Chinese which will be used to promote PIER to prospective buyers, distributors, agencies and customers in Asian markets.

(Students will need to apply for a Leave of Absence in order to participate in the internship).

What is the internship content?

Academic credit MAY be available. Credit for the internship is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping. A list of SEP faculty coordinators and administrators can be found here. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.

Please note, these are estimated expenses and actual expenses may differ based on price shifts, spending habits and personal travels.  


Is financial assistance available?

No monthly stipend is available. PIER will provide the intern with a free accommodation in a close proximity to the company for the duration of the internship. Intern can apply for the NASA Enhancement Awards through IRO.

What are the eligibility requirements?

 
  • Any Faculty
  • CAP of 3.0 or above
  • Students in year 1, 2 and 3. Intern’s final semester has to be spent at NUS
  • Being fluent in English and Mandarin is a must
  • A strong interest in fashion design and garment production
  • Being fashion-forward and having knowledge of fashion industry is a plus

 

Is visa required?

Students are to consult Embassy of Italy in Singapore to determine if a visa is required and to apply for an entry visa if needed.
