International Internship Programme
What is this programme about?
The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance – International IDEA – is an intergovernmental organization that supports sustainable democracy worldwide. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, IDEA has regional offices in New York, Latin America, Africa and Asia.
With the objective to strengthen democratic institutions and processes, International IDEA acts as a catalyst for democracy building by providing knowledge resources, policy proposals and supporting democratic reforms in response to specific national requests. It works together with policy makers, governments, UN organizations and agencies and regional organizations engaged in the field of democracy building.
International IDEA offers internship positions of 3 months or longer at the Electoral Processes (EP) Programme in its headquarter office in Stockholm.
When does the programme take place?
From August/September to mid December for 3 months or longer. Students who will be able to start the internship in June are preferred.

What is the internship/academic content?
To provide support to the Electoral Processes team activities through the update of the IDEA’s Unified Database. Databases are mainly updated by conducting international comparative research on legislations and related document.
Academic credit MAY be available. Credit for the internship is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.
What is the student accommodation?
Interns seek accommodation on their own with assistance from International IDEA.
How much does the programme cost?
This is an unpaid internship. Only local transport costs (subway, bus, local train, and local ferry) will be covered by IDEA. The intern is responsible for his/her visa fee, return airfare to and from Stockholm, accommodation, health insurance, food and other expenses during the internship.

Please note, these are estimated expenses and actual expenses may differ based on price shifts and personal spending habits.
Is financial assistance available?
Yes. Students can apply for the NASA Enhancement Awards through IRO.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Is a visa required?
Yes. Students are to consult the Embassy of Sweden in Singapore to determine if a visa is required and to apply for an entry visa if needed.
The Embassy of Denmark is handling all visa applications to Sweden.
