Explore contemporary issues in the Cradle of Chinese Civilization

Programme Dates: 31 May to 27 June 2009

Programme Highlights:

  2. Join field trips to the Three Gorges and Terra-cotta Warriors (in Xi’an)
  3. Appreciate the exquisite Chinese Culture through Chinese language classes, Chinese painting and visits to historical sites in Wuhan

Course details:

The summer programme, jointly offered by NUS and the Wuhan University, is structured on an intensive basis that aims to provide a general understanding of China by focusing on topical aspects of both historical and contemporary China. Topics that will be discussed include Chinese historical traditions, Chinese world order, Chinese economy, environmental issues and legal system in contemporary China. The 4-week programme is divided into 4 parts and co-taught by lecturers from both NUS and Wuhan University:

  1. Environment and Climate Change (Prof Victor Savage, NUS)
  2. Law and Order (Prof Kong Lingjie & Prof Nie Jianqian, Wuhan (WHU))
  3. Historical and Cultural Traditions (Prof Lee Cheuk Yin, NUS)
  4. Economy and Enterprise (Prof Liu Xueyuan, WHU)

Notes: All Chinese language courses will be conducted in both Chinese and English, academic lectures and seminars will be conducted in English. Chinese language courses are optional and will not be counted as CA.

Mode of Teaching and Learning:

NUS Students will attend lectures and seminars at the Wuhan University. Besides visits to local historical sites, study trips outside Wuhan will also be organized, including fieldtrip to Three Gorges to examine the environmental issues relating to the Three Gorges Project; and excursion to Xi’an to visit the Terra-cotta Warrior Museum to trace the founding of the Chinese empire.

Modular Credits: The programme carries 4 MC and is recognized by both the Department of Chinese Studies and China Studies Minor Programme. It can be mapped with CH3292 Selected Topics in Chinese Civilization. The application for credit transfer is subject to the successful completion of the course.

Eligibility: All full time NUS undergraduates who are interested in learning about the past and recent development of China are welcome to apply. Priority will be given to non Chinese nationals. To qualify for the programme, a minimum CAP of 3.0 is required.

Accommodation: Students will be arranged to stay on campus. Each room is equipped with two single beds, mattresses, desk, chairs, desk lamp, refrigerator, TV, telephone, Internet access and attached bathroom.

Insurance: All participants are required to purchase a travel insurance which cover medical and accident for the whole duration of stay in China. An insurance policy must be provided upon registration.

Visa Application: You have to apply for a visa from the China Embassy. Wuhan University will issue a visa application form (JW202) and admission letter for your visa application.

Expected Expenditure:  Shortlisted candidates will be given subsidies for the programme. The expected expenditures for each student will be S$900, which will include return airfare, accommodation, course fee, field trips and selected meals during fieldtrips.

Please complete the application form and submit the hard copy to Ms Sharon Lee at Office of Programmes, FASS (The Shaw Foundation Building, Blk AS7 Level 2) or scanned copy to ophelp@nus.edu.sg by 30 April 2009. The application result will be released in early May.

Background information:

Hubei Province is located in the heart of China.  There are many key infrastructures and industries such as the world-famous Three Gorges Dam, the Optics Valley of China, Dongfeng Autombobile Co. Ltd and Wuhan Iron & Steel (Group) Corporation.  The major goals of Hubei Province are to develop high-tech industries, strengthen technological innovation and make Wuhan one of the major manufacturing bases in China.

Wuhan is the largest capital city in central China.  Within a radius of 1,200 kilometers, people can reach Beijing and Tianjin in the north, Guangzhou and Hong Kong in the south, Shanghai and Hangzhou in the east, and Chengdu and Xi’an in the west.  It is known as “the thoroughfare to 9 provinces”.  With the strategy of “the Rise of China” by the Chinese central government, Wuhan has become a promising city and an ideal land for business and investment.

Yes. You can apply for the Overseas Study Programme (OSP) Loan.

Yes, the date will be announced later.  It is usually held one to two weeks prior to the start date of the programme.
