The University of Ulm is one of the top schools in Germany in the natural sciences. It is located in Ulm, a small but beautiful city located along the Danube River in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The approximately 7,000 students studying on its campus enjoy a calm and natural environment that provides both a stimulating learning atmosphere and place to meet friends.
Ulm is 100 km (60 miles) from Stuttgart and 120 km (72 miles) from Munich. It is only 100km away from the borders of Switzerland and Austria! Ulm has 120,000 inhabitants and is a very safe place.

General Information:
The 13th International Summer Programme at the University of Ulm will be held from 2 June – 31 July 2009. Students will take part in an intensive German language course as well as a course in practical Physics training. As the German summer semester overlaps with the period of this summer school, participating students will have the chance to make friends with local students and exchange students from all over the world.
Students will be able to take part in trips to the region scenic Swabian Highlands and to the Alps, see some of Germany's beautiful castles or visit the nice cafes and beer gardens along the Danube.
Please note that no prior knowledge of German is required!
Courses:
As part of the summer school, students will be provided with a unique opportunity to learn German in a tailored intensive course for beginners (150 hours) instructed by experienced teachers. The first week of the language course will be accompanied by an introductory lecture that takes a brief look into Germany and its history. Mornings will be spent on German classes, while the afternoons will be spent on Practical Training in Physics. Fridays and weekends are either used for excursions or will otherwise be free time.

Interested students should complete the application form which can be downloaded here. Please submit the application form to your faculty SEP coordinator by 5.30PM, Friday, 20 March 2009.
Important instructions: In the form, please ignore the application deadline of 15 March 2009 and make sure that you adhere to the 20 March 2009 deadline instead. For NUS students, please make sure you apply only for the German intensive course and the Practical Training in Physics, and NOT the course entitled “The European Union and Germany”. Please also make sure that you check the boxes under “Examination”.
Fees and Other Costs:
The tuition fee for the summer programme is waived for students from NUS. Access to all university services is included (library, pc labs with e-mail, sports activities etc).
Students will have to pay 880 Euros for the following:
- Accommodation in single rooms in university dorms in Ulm and Neu-Ulm, or comparable private rooms (from June 2 to July 31, 2009)
- Bus pass for public transportation in Ulm / Neu-Ulm
- Books and course material for German Intensive Course
- Handouts
- Orientation Days Program and Farewell Party
- Ulm City Tour
- Day trip to nearby Blaubeuren
Not included:
- Security deposit: a 50 Euro deposit against damages or unpaid fees. It will be refunded at the end of the program given there are no outstanding fees to be paid
- Meals – you can eat lunch in the university cafeteria for around 2.50 Euro
- Personal expenses
- Excursions (private or arranged by the university, if not offered for free)
- Flight to and from Germany
A budget of 100 Euro per week allows for comfortable living including food, telephone, leisure time expenses etc. It does not include travel costs.
