Peking University (PKU) Summer School International
Programme Dates: 29 June to 31 July 2009 (5 weeks)
Overview:
Peking University offers its inaugural summer programme to international students (non-Chinese nationals) from all over the world. There is an array of courses covering issues related to China's politics, economy, environment and culture as well as a Chinese Language course. The English courses will be taught by distinguished professors and renowned experts from Peking University while the Chinese Language course will be organized by the International College of Chinese Language Studies.
Tours to selected historical and cultural interest in Beijing will be organized to provide the students with opportunities to experience Chinese customs and culture. Students will receive an official transcript of Peking University upon completion of the programme.

The following courses will be conducted in English. Participants can choose up to 2 courses and 1 Chinese language course.
- Air Pollution and Health Effects in Contemporary China
- Chinese Economy: Reforms and Challenges
- Chinese Folklore and Culture
- Discovering Chinese History in Beijing
- Chinese Music
- Contemporary Chinese Literature and Film
- Hydrology and the Water Resources of China
- Local Traditions and Chinese Society
- Survey of Theories about Nation and How (Not) to Apply Them to China

In the event that the course enrollment is less than 10 students, the course will be cancelled. Peking university will keep you informed.
Modular Credits: Peking University offers 2-3 credits for each of the modules above. Please submit your study plan to the respective faculties prior to the programme for approval on credit transfer.
Eligibility: All full time NUS undergraduates (except Chinese nationals) who are interested in learning about the recent development of China are welcome to apply.
Accommodation: Participants have to make their own arrangement for accommodation. In the event that you choose to rent or stay with the locals, please register at the local police station (in Beijing).
Insurance: All participants are required to purchase a travel insurance which cover medical and accident for the whole duration of stay in China. An insurance policy must be provided upon registration.
Visa Application: You have to apply for a visa from the China Embassy. Peking University will issue a visa application form (JW202) and admission letter by 10 May 2009 for your visa application.

Please complete the application form and submit to Ms Zann Lum at irolym@nus.edu.sg by 28 April 2009. The application result will be released in early May.
Please get ready the following materials for submission to Peking University.
- A completed “Application Form for Peking University Summer School” with attached passport-size photo
- 2 additional passport-size photos
- A photocopy of passport information page
- A copy of Chinese Result (’A’, ‘AO’ or ’O’ level result)
- Application fee (via telegraphic transfer to Peking University's bank account)

1. Am I eligible to apply if I am a Year 1 or Year 4 student?
The Programme is open to all full-time NUS undergraduates. Please seek your faculty's advice if you are in your graduating semester.
2. Can I apply for another Student Exchange Programme (SEP) if I am selected for the summer programme?
Please approach your faculty SEP administrators for advice.
3. Are there any loan schemes available for the programme?
Yes. You can apply for the Overseas Student Programme (OSP) Loan.
4. What am I expected to deliver at the end of the programme?
You are required to submit a 1-2 page report reflecting your experiences and share with us your photos (scenic picture of China or pictures taken with your peers) in JPEG format within 2 weeks upon your return. Please email Ms Zann Lum at irolym@nus.edu.sg.
