The Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich is located in Munich, Germany, and with more than 44,000 students, is also the second largest university in the country. It was recently named as the highest ranked university in Germany according to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Rankings 2008.
Munich is the capital city of Bavaria and is located on the River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. This third largest city in Germany with 1.35 million inhabitants has often been called the cultural capital of the country because of its abundance of rich traditions.
General Information:
The summer programme at LMU will be held from 1 -21 June 2009. Students will take part in an intensive course on the European Union. The programme is entitled “Approaching the European Union” and will give students an opportunity to learn about the European Union and its relations with the world.
As the German summer semester overlaps with the period of this summer school, participating students will have the chance to make friends with local students and exchange students from all over the world.
Students will be brought on exciting excursions to the beautiful city of Salzburg in Austria, as well as to the German capital, Berlin.

Please note that no prior knowledge of German is required as classes will be conducted in English!
Courses:
Students will attend lectures on European history, the political and economic aspects of European integration, explore cross-cutting issues affecting the EU, and study the interactions between the EU and the US, China, Southeast Asia, Russia and the Middle East. They will also learn about the Lisbon Treaty, give presentations on the EU’s perceived image and its raison d'être, and go on excursions to historical places in Bavaria and Berlin.
Apart from giving presentations and submission of assignments, regular attendance is expected and a 3500-4000 word essay will need to be submitted after the conclusion of the programme. Students will be granted 6 ECTS, which is the equivalent of 4 MCs at NUS. Credit transfer will be granted subject to the approval of your faculty.
Accommodation:
Students will be accommodated in student residence halls. The student housing facilities are all located close to bus or subway stations with a good connection to the university, which is located near Munich’s downtown area.

Fees and Other Costs:
The registration and course fee for the programme is €1500. This covers the following:
- participation in all classes
- participation in all excursions including those to Salzburg and Berlin
- airport transfer
- monthly ticket (subway, bus, tram)
- course reading material
- housing
Please note that considerable financial aid may be available and students are advised to apply for the programme first.
Students will be responsible for their own meals, personal expenses and flight to and from Germany.
