Summer Programme at The University of Hong Kong


Asia as the Global Future -
4-week programme in Hong Kong, Macau, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Seoul

(Register before 15 February 2009 for early bird discount)

Programme Dates: 21 June – 19 July 2009 (4 weeks)

The 4th “Asia as the Global Future” course is a structured undergraduate porgramme on Asian Studies. It aims at enhancing an awareness of the importance of Asia in world affairs. In parallel with inspiring lectures, students will also be exposed to key issues in Asian affairs through a series of field trips in Hong Kong, Macau, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Seoul.  Each of these field trips will also contain an academic component. Courses will be conducted by invited guest speakers such as renowned businessmen, community leaders, and scholars.

21 June – 2 July 2009
(including study tour to Macau on 26 & 27 June)

3 – 10 July 2009 (Shanghai and Hangzhou)

11 – 19 July 2009 (Seoul)

Modular Credits: As this is an enrichment and exposure programme, NUS will not give any credit for students who attend the programme.

Eligibility: All full time NUS undergraduates who have completed at least one year of study at NUS and are interested in learning about the recent development of China and Asia are welcome to apply.

Accommodation: Students will be assigned student dormitories on a share-room basis at the Universities of Hong Kong and accommodations in Macau, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Seoul. At HKU, all rooms are air-conditioned and well-furnished. Accommodation will be provided from 20 June to 20 July, 2009 (30 nights).

Application: Students should apply online with HKU by 31 March 2009. A copy of the application should be sent to IRO (Ms Zann Lum at irolym@nus.edu.sg) for record. (Please note that there is an early bird discount for students who register before 15 February 2009.)

1. Am I eligible to apply if I am a Year 1 or Year 4 student?

The Programme is open to all full-time NUS undergraduates. Please seek your faculty's advice if you are in your graduating semester.


2. Can I apply for another Student Exchange Programme (SEP) if I am selected for the summer programme?

Please approach your faculty SEP administrators for advice.


3. Are there any loan schemes available for the programme?

Yes. You can apply for the Overseas Student Programme (OSP) Loan.

4. What am I expected to deliver at the end of the programme?

You are required to submit a 1-2 page report reflecting your experiences and share with us your photos (scenic picture of Hong Kong or pictures taken with your peers) in JPEG format within 2 weeks upon your return. Please email Ms Zann Lum at irolym@nus.edu.sg.
