Course details:

Topic: Understanding China: Past and Present

Part 1 – Environment Management and Change (Prof Victor Savage, NUS)
Part 2 – Law and Order (Prof Nie Jianqian & Prof Kong Lingjie, WHU)
Part 3 – History and Culture (Prof Lee Cheuk Yin, NUS)
Part 4 – Economy and Enterprise (Prof Liu Xueyuan, WHU)

Notes:
1. Academic lectures and seminars will be conducted in English.
2. All Chinese language courses are optional and will be conducted in both Chinese and English. Different levels, Advanced, Intermediate and Beginners, may be offered based on student number.

Mode of Teaching and Learning: Students will attend lectures and seminars at the Wuhan University. Besides visits to local historical sites, study trips outside Wuhan will also be organized, including fieldtrip to Three Gorges to examine the environmental issues relating to the Three Gorges Project; and excursion to Xi’an to visit the Terra-cotta Warrior Museum and historical sites to study the cultural traditions of the Qin-Han and Tang dynasties.

Modular Credits: The programme carries 4 MC and is recognized by both the Department of Chinese Studies and Chinese Studies Minor Programme. The application for credit transfer is subjected to the successful completion of the courses.

Eligibility: All full time NUS undergraduates who are interested in learning about the past and recent developments of China are welcome to apply. Priority will be given to non Chinese nationals. To qualify for the programme, a minimum CAP of 3.4 is required.

Accommodation: Students will be arranged to live on WHU campus. Each room is equipped with two single beds, mattresses, desk, chairs, desk lamp, refrigerator, TV, telephone, Internet access and attached bathroom.

Insurance: All participants are required to purchase a travel insurance which cover medical and accident for the whole duration of stay in China. An insurance policy must be provided upon registration at WHU.

Visa Application: Students are required to apply for a 1 month tourist visa from the China Embassy.

Cost of Programme:  S$700 after subsides from NUS and IE Singapore (includes return airfare, accommodation, course fee, field trips and selected meals during fieldtrips)

Application:  Please complete the application form and submit the hard copy to Ms Sharon Lee at Office of Programme, FASS (The Shaw Foundation Building, Blk AS7, Level 2) or scanned copy to ophelp@nus.edu.sg by 30 October 2009.  The application result will be released by early November.

 

Background information:

Hubei Province is located in the heart of China.  There are many key infrastructures and industries such as the world-famous Three Gorges Dam, the Optics Valley of China, Dongfeng Autombobile Co. Ltd and Wuhan Iron & Steel (Group) Corporation.  The major goals of Hubei Province are to develop high-tech industries, strengthen technological innovation and make Wuhan one of the major manufacturing bases in China.

Wuhan is the largest capital city in central China.  Within a radius of 1,200 kilometers, people can reach Beijing and Tianjin in the north, Guangzhou and Hong Kong in the south, Shanghai and Hangzhou in the east, and Chengdu and Xi’an in the west.  It is known as “the thoroughfare to 9 provinces”.  With the strategy of “the Rise of China” by the Chinese central government, Wuhan has become a promising city and an ideal land for business and investment.

1. Who are eligible to apply for this Programme?

All full time NUS undergraduates are eligible to apply for this Programme regardless of nationality. Priority will be given to non Chinese nationals.

2. Can I apply for another Student Exchange Programme (SEP) if I am selected for Summer Programmes?

Generally, you can still apply for an SEP even if you have participated in a summer programme, subjected to approval from your faculty.

3.  Are there any loan schemes available for the Programme?

Yes. You can apply for the Overseas Study Programme (OSP) Loan.

4. Will there be a briefing before I depart for the Programme?

Yes, the date will be announced later.  It is usually held one to two weeks prior to the start date of the programme.

5. What am I expected to deliver at the end of the Programme?

You are required to submit a report with pictures within 2 weeks upon your return to IRO (Ms Zann Lum, Email: irolym@nus.edu.sg).
