If you have always been fascinated by European culture and history, and would like to visit Europe to experience it first-hand, this is the ideal opportunity for you! The International Relations Office (IRO) is proud to present the French and German Language Immersion Awards. These awards were created to give students the opportunity to experience life in a non-English speaking environment and will be invaluable in increasing your French or German language proficiency.
What can I expect?
Selected students can look forward to an enriching language and cultural immersion in France, Germany or Switzerland. The immersions are held yearly in May/June/ July (depending on the destination) and generally last for a period of 3 to 4 weeks.
The award covers the cost of the language classes, accommodation and some meals. Students will have to bear the cost of their plane ticket to France, Germany or Switzerland, as well as any other costs.
Why should I apply for the LIA?
CLS lecturers have commented the students who return from the language immersion usually show a marked improvement in their language proficiency. Students have found the experience rewarding, and this fuels their desire to participate in the Student Exchange Programme (SEP).
Who can apply?
The application for the Language Immersion Award is open to all students who are taking French 2 or German 2 in their Year 1 Semester 2, but priority will be given to LPP students in the selection. Each of the LIAs may have a further set of eligibility criteria. For more information, please refer to the downloadable presentations.
French Language Immersion Award
First-year students who are taking French 2 in AY08/09 Sem 2 can apply for the language immersion programmes at:
- INSA Lyon, France, co-sponsored by NUS
- Fribourg, Switzerland, sponsored by swissnex Singapore
German Language Immersion Award
First-year students who are taking German 2 in AY08/09 Sem 2 can apply for the language immersion programmes at:
- University of Stuttgart, Germany, sponsored by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Wuerttemberg (BWMRSA) and NUS
- Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, sponsored by TU Darmstadt and NUS
- Fribourg, Switzerland, sponsored by swissnex Singapore
Application Timeline and Procedures
Concrete details about the dates and other details about the language immersions will be released to students before their departure. Students are encouraged to proceed with the applications first as there is a limited number of awards.

The deadline for application for the French and German LIA is 27 February 2009, 5.30PM. Forms should be deposited into the International Relations Office mailbox at:

Important Reminders
Accepting the Language Immersion Award constitutes an agreement to go back to a particular university/region for exchange – if you do not do so, you will be liable to pay the University the penalty amount of $3000.
