Notice for NUS students currently in, or going to South Korea, Japan and China for Student Exchange Programme (SEP) or Global Opportunities

The political tensions in the Korean Peninsula and the H7N9 bird flu virus in China are a cause of concern for NUS students who are currently in, or going to South Korea, Japan and China for SEP or global opportunities.

As of 12 April 2013, the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has not issued any notice against travel to South Korea, Japan or China, nor advised Singaporeans to leave from these countries. As such, NUS is adopting the same approach, and has not recalled our students from South Korea, Japan and China, nor have we advised our students against going on SEP and global opportunities in these countries.

Nonetheless, in view of the potential risks, NUS students in or going to South Korea, Japan and China are strongly advised to observe the following:

  • Update any changes to your overseas contact details in South Korea, Japan or China, as well as your Next-Of-Kin (NOK) contact details in Singapore, with your NUS Faculty/School and the NUS International Relations Office (IRO), if you have not already done so.

  • NUS students in South Korea, Japan or China should eRegister with MFA at http://eregister.mfa.gov.sg, to facilitate contact in the event of an emergency.

  • Monitor the local developments through the media, and take all necessary precautions for your personal safety, including observing instructions from the local authorities.

  • Monitor and read any travel notice updates from NUS IRO at this website, or from Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

  • Ensure that you have purchased appropriate travel insurance coverage.

  • In the event of any emergency, please remain calm, and await for further advice from NUS. You may also contact NUS IRO at +65 6777-5547 (during Singapore office hours), the NUS Emergency hotline at +65 6874-1616 (24 hours) or MFA at +65 6379-8800/8855 (24 hours).

In the event that NUS students in South Korea, Japan or China are recalled by NUS back to Singapore, NUS would give further advice on the academic impact and remedial course of action for the affected students.
